oh son of a XD
If you're saying that Luffy vulcanised in second gear... it was already explained that it was just Soru.
then what da hell was with all that steam and smoke?
If he did go under vulcanization, Luffy's second gear would be very hazardous to his own body, since it is apparently irreversible and non-biodegradable.
So far, all we have seen about the second gear is that it's powerful. Vulcanization supposedly makes rubber a far more durable substance, however, Luffy has shown not toughness but power and speed.

It is pretty obvious that luffy is using cp9 forms. Most clearly because he says "I'm really glad I met you" just before hitting second gear. I suppose there could be some debate on that, but the one answer that some people have posed that doesn't sit right with me is vulcanization. Yes, vulcanization makes rubber sturdier and more resistant to temperature changes. Thing is, luffy's rubber has been vulcanized since day one. Rubber is pathetic before it is vulcanized. It melts on hot days and cracks on cold days. Vulcanizing is a one time process. No repeats. IMHO that steam coming off luffy was nothing more than a special effect, equivilent to a studio ghibli character's hair rising on end when they get mad or a wind picking up around a fighter before he or she does a special technique. It's just something visually dramatic without any true meaning. It could even be chakra/chi/ki/energy.
nice theory even tho this is like the third time ive seen this as an explanation... all i gotta say is this... Luffy is a PERSON so even if his 2nd gear is him vulcanizing himself since hes a living thing he may be able to turn back so hes not permanantly vulcanized (if that is in fact what he did) im not sure but thats my outlook on your opinions
Well, those are probably just added for effects... like in DbZ. But if you want a scientific explaination, then the product of respiration always involves water. And seeing as Luffy needs to power up, his muscles respire at an extremely rapid rate which releases huge amounts of water and energy, water + heat = steam and cause he's respiring so fast the steam is just released form his body to avoid disrupting the osmotic equilibrium in his body. (you should probably just pay attention to the first sentence I was being random)Quote:

And based on hints, he's got a third gear as well. Wonder what that'll be.
Remains to be seen however.
