Thread: What do you or don't you like about One Piece?

Stuff I like:

I love the way the story is going right now. In other shounen mangas you have the same thing happening over and over again with short pauses for either training or fighting tournaments. The bad guys are mostly on par with the level of strength the Heroes have just atained, while in OP they can be far stronger or weaker nowadays. The plot differs from time to time, has lots of comedy dark conspiracys and an overall goal to achieve.

Take Naruto: fightt, training, cry, stronger oponent, training, fight, sasukes story, fight, cry, training........
Bleach: Save girl, show 100 fights between minor characters, big fight, save girl.......
even the fights are alway the same: normal vs normal then normal vs power up, poerup vs powerup, last powerup vs powerup, last powerup vs last powerup, final attack, boom lots of mist and tada the winner is ...
Hitman Reborn: training, fight, new item, training, fight.....
Dragon Ball: fight, training, tournament, fight, training, fight, tournament.....
Hunter X Hunter: new quest, new Nen insight, training, fight,.........
Full Metal Alchemist: Oh wait this one has it's unique storyline
All Harem mangas: ......read one......
Shaman King: just one big tournament with fight, die, train, revie, fight
I could go on but.....

One Piece usually has short fights which go hand in hand with the plot. They interact! Theey aren't kept in two seperate rooms as in most other mangas.

The Ideas for the new Islands they go to and the secrets that are yet to be reveiled are allways great.

O.K. in the beginning, or up to the grand Line even OP had the same scenario of find new crew, beat up new pirate, but there was always an interesting and intuitiv story behind it, not just: they evil or on different team kill they ass!!!!!!

Oh and theres no: Ha that was only 20 % of my power, now wittness 25 % lol!!!! That is something I really can't stand. All chars go at it with their full strength from the beginning except if they'r 100 times stronger of course.


Stuff I don't like:

How everybody can survive everything(Bird with Bomb).

Willpower = more strength (but this is a given in shounen mangas)

How some villans, mostly in the beginning were just ridiculesly evil out of no other aparent reason except being evil. I hate it when the bad guy admits he's the bad guy. People don't see themselves as evil.....that's something made up by movies, books and comics (Yes I get the irony that OP itself is a Comic). But luckily right now the only real bad guys are the world nobels)

You summed up well why OP is vastly superior to most other shonen mangas

I will add that if OP can manage its arcs so well is partly because Oda thought his story up before starting drawing his manga! This may seem obvious but the fact is most other shonens don't work like this at all : the mangaka starts drawing his manga with a plot in mind, and then he will try to imagine a sequel to his arc that fits well with the beginning, and he will do so on and on until nobody is left to read his mess of a scenario.

I also really like how most people, enemies included, are never shown as stereotypical evil doers. But who are you thinking about when you say some were ridiculously evil ? Arbida wasn't, the black cat was a cynical asshole but he wasn't that much evil either (or at least not more the average real life asshole)... Idem for Arlong, who was really evil but only against humans, and from what we know now he had lots of reasons to behave like that.


Anyway, the current arc is so awesome I stopped reading OP a few weeks ago... I'll try to endure until the war end ^^

Not everyone survives everything. You see a lot of people get killed subtly (current arc), or explicitly (Nami's adpoted mother being killed by Arlong). However, Oda did want to make it clear that Luffy will never kill anyone, which is good. If Luffy killed people, it would go against his own nature; he'll kick your ass so you see your wrongs, but he won't take your life.

It's less about willpower in OP I think. People are usually strong because they are strong; sometimes they just need that extra little push to go over the top. Granted, there are times when Luffy almost dies, and then he comes back to win, but that's just using literary devices to build suspence and climax. If people just go in an win right off the bat, it won't draw the reader into the story. Readers get hooked and want to know 'will X win?' which attributes to the manga's popularity. In the end, you're right, all Shounen manga have the power of believing/etc. but OP doesn't abuse the shit out of it like others.

People can know they're evil if they're sociopaths. They know they're doing something deemed wrong by society, but they don't really care. Also, not every villain needs to be complex. Like you said, those were just the villains in the beginning; they introduced the story and that's about it. Finally, this manga's about pirates, so in general, everyone is bad to some degree.

The breaks he takes suck for us, but he needs some time off too. When Oda takes a break, he delivers like hell in the following chapter. If it makes the story better, let him take all the breaks he needs. Plus he has a wife; gotta give some loving =3

yeah at least his breaks dont take as long as the breaks between a lot of hunter x hunter chapters

I know some people die but it's mostly in flashbacks or this new war arc. There were just some chapters in the skypia arc where I thought it was weird for noone to be killed by Enel. And Zorro never kills anyone either(except 4 Helmeppos Wolf) even though he uses swords which is kinda weird

You're right that OP doesn't overuse it like others it just bugs me sometimes.

There isn't much bad to say about OP so I just started nitpicking.

One Piece is close to perfection xDD

And well, I´m not really bothered by the "no-death-in-the-present" thing, the only issue is that if nobody dies there´s a certain thrill you won´t have...(but still, if the scene is written well, you´re still excited ^^)

i like how sometimes there are things that happen mostly just to be funny. like the person who looked like the drawing of sanji on the wanted poster. and when they did the crew gambling thing. although i did like the part with zoro and sanji playing that ball game it just seemed like a weird little thing that served no real purpose except maybe to have chopper realize that things could go a lot different then you want them to go.
