There was once (around 1850) a theory about how snails could communicate "wirelessly" through great distances, allowing free communications around the world. This theory's practical result is known as the Pasilalinic-sympathetic compass, vulgarly known as the Snail telegraph !!

Résumé : A franco-american team invented the snail telegraph around 1850, which allowed them to communicate wirelessly between France and America.

The snail telegraph itself was a device upon which as many snails as the number of letters in the alphabet were attached (or more precisely, glued). By pressing on a snail, the corresponding snail on the second device was supposed to move too (as they were linked to each other by a "sympathetic"/telepathic bond).
