Thread: New One Piece dub by funimation

First if making a new thread for this was pointless instead of posting in one of the other threads then by all means fix my mistake.

Alright this might be old news and what not but if any of you saw the english version of One piece then your familiar with the complete crap that is 4kids (with the exception of Zoro's voice actor).
But thats not exactly what this thread is about. I was at an anime convention here in Georgia, called Anime Weekend Atlanta, for all three days. Sunday is particularly important as Funimation premiered their One Piece dub. three episodes that started just before the crew finds out about Skypia. However this wasn't the uncut version that they plan to release, it was the edited tv version.
Notable differences were, instead of a lollypop sanji didn't have anything in his mouth, the guns were actual guns instead of squirt bottles, in general better voice acting for everyone(mainly Nico doesn't sound like a brainless hick, and Sanji doesn't sound like a retarded new yorker), and the series has it's original intro videos and outros, however as is funimation tradition they have an original soundtrack that plays through those intros and outros which isn't half bad, but is still over nine thousand times better than what 4kids put into it(pretty sure as is tradition the original intro/outro soundtrack plays when you set the dvd to japanese audio).

Now before I say who voices who, apparantly as a couple of funimation people were there(some of the voice actors and directors) they had to follow a few stipulations before they could touch it. Those being 1) that certain things would be in it even for the cut version. 2) they had to have everything okayed from both the original creator and the anime team, including voice actors.

Luffy- Colleenn Clinkenbeard (apparantly Funimation's new talent)
Zoro-Christopher R. Sabat (Vegeta, Yamcha, Piccolo, Zarbon, Recoome, Jeice, Burter, Salza, (and others) from DBz, and Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho)
Sanji- Eric Vale (Shorin/Rando, and Sakyou from Yu Yu Hakusho, Kimblee in Full Metal Alchemist, and Trunks from DBZ)
Nami- Luci Christian (Clara/Psiren, and Wrath from Full Metal alchemist)
Usopp- Sonny Strait (Krillin from DBZ fits usopp perfectly btw)
Nico- Stephanie Young (Mereille from Trinity Blood)
Chopper- Brina Palencia (Played voices of nina tucker from FMA, and Elise Wasmeyer from Trinity Blood)
And of course the guy(or at least one of them) who did goku's voice from dbz does countless minor character voices.

So discuss, clamor, or hate whatever, figured someone had to post something if anything.

Funimation has my vote. 4kids fails.

=> doesn't he smoke at ALL anymore ? or was it because he didn't smoke at that time ?
If it is the first case, it sucks... especially as it seems they did a good job overall

Im pretty sure he smokes all the time, it's just instead of just putting something stupid there like a lollypop(4 kids) they just took it out altogether, but far as I know the uncut has him smoking, as well as all the other unessicary scenes cut out for whatever reason 4 kids did it. Mostly I think any cuts to the tv one would mainly be because of time restraints usually given on broadcast. I havn't downloaded any one piece episodes in ages so the only ones I have to go on in terns of how long each episode usually was is the first few episodes and I remember those being about 45 minutes(unless my mind played tricks on me).
And as this site says http://funimation.com/onepiece/ The new dub will be sown on cartoon network the 29th of this month.

most if not all animes are 20-25 minutes long with ads in the middle, so there is no special time restraint. They cut them to soften them (it was especially clear for 4kids version, and taking out sanji's cigarettes is the same).
"Nothing" is better than lollipops, but it still kinda sucks for this character :P

I didn't think they'd actually do it. Unfortunately now the sound of Sanji and Ussopp's 4kids voices have permanantly tainted my hearing. Now whenever I watch a badly dubbed anime I won't be able to say "at least it's not as bad as One Piece."

this thread is about the new dub made by funimation, not 4kids' (4kids' one should only be used here for comparisons' sake ;p)

Ah I guess that was just my memory being wonky on me.
Sadly there was a Q and A session after they showed the episodes and I wasn't able to stay for that, so I have no clue if they are planning to redo what 4kids did (they better) or just start from the skypia arc like they did with the premier.

And yeah I agree it kinda sucks but hey that just means there uncut dvd's will be all the sweeter. Im sure if anyone watches the premier on CN on the 29th will allow for more uh criticism than now as you all pretty much have obnly my word to go on it.

Well, nothing can be worse than 4kids version, right ? It already reached the bottom of being lame, it can get just any worse than that.

Has anybody else here watched Dub Piece?
