I don't think Oda transitioned his events very well. After the epic fight with CP9, and Black beard encounter with Ace, for the straw hats to be faltering against Zombies, it just seems, I dunno, bland.

well, i indeed know people who disliked the beginning of the last arc (though they later found it cool enough ^^), but personally what can appear as randomness is one of the aspects i love in One Piece ! Of course we could have expected something more epic after the last arc and ace fight, but as with the skipea arc followed by the foxy arc we could be sure we would have a funny/lighter arc (though fighting one of the shichibukai isn't something really trivial )

edit : i didn't understand well the word faltering, my bad ;p ==> the SH literally owned the zombies, but as these zombies/etc are immortal they couldn't do much and as chinsee said were taken by surprise... Also, it doesn't seem weird at all for a shichibukai top crew to be at the level of the CP9 or stronger, though this one relies too much on its supposed immortality ^^"

I must say i am biased though as i love zombies lol, but what i love best in this arc is the art.

i wouldn't say they're faltering against zombies, I mean luffy was caught in a very stupid way and no doubt the same happened to sanji and zoro, so the enemies aren't stronger than them(and CP9) they're just smarter.

What makes this manga popular is that it flows really well, especially considering its current length. Granted there was a lull after blackbeard and ace fight, but its picking up again. And the story is really funny. And yet there are those frames were the drawing makes luffy nothing short of a badass.

Also the enemies in the current arc arent smarter than CP9, they are used to using the same trap over and over again. Their experience allowed them to succeed.

uhh, and they made and successfully executed their traps over and over. Not to mention nobody noticed zoro and sanji missing, which means their traps were really good. Which shows they're smart, I mean CP9 was far from dumb, but they focused more on brute strength rather than actual strategy. I mean wouldn't it be easier to get lucci to grab spandam and robin then just fly his way to the ship, rather than walk slowly thru the tunnel?

in this case the cp9 was just way over confident though, it was not a problem of strategy or stupidity ^^
