well there may have been ranks then too considering that Gol D. Roger was pirate king, however Whitebeard was alive then and he was laso considered to be very strong so whitebeard might have had a rank however i doubt they were called emperors then

yes...how come they be called emperors when roger was only king??? and at that time roger was the greatest of them all...

Emperor > king..... wb, shanks > roger???.............total BS to me....

also, shanks was a LITTLE kid when roger was still around.... this needs no further argument....I dont know about the sichibukais tho....

I think the mangaka uses "ou" to describe both 4 emperors (yonkou) and king (kaizoku ou). So technically they mean the same thing in the japanese version.

the question this begs from me is... if gold rogers death started the great age of pirates, what the fuck was going on when he was alive. was piracy not a big thing back then. the manga leads us to believe that piracy got big when One Piece was announced when it shows that people like Shanks, Buggy, Arlong, WhiteBeard etc were rampant before and during Gold Rogers life.

The great age of pirates was started by Gol D. Roger because he announced to the world the existence of One Piece, the enormous lump of treasure that could set a person for 10 lifetimes over. It's likely that there were pirates back then (of course there were), Roger couldn't have been the only one, but I doubt that the ranking system that exists in the present existed in that time.

Back then, it was just Roger and Whitebeard at the top of the horde of pirates in the Grand Line. After Roger died, more and more people appeared: Shanks, Mihawk, Luffy (kinda), the other emperors, the Shichi Bukai (speculation right here). For all we know, it was through the combined efforts of the Shichi Bukai and Supreme Admirals that Roger and his crew were finally taken down (to an extent, at least).

Shanks was in Roger's crew, ergo he couldn't be ''rampant'' before, or even directly after, the announcement of One Piece. Same with Buggy. And I hardly doubt that Arlong was around during Roger's period of rule over pirates on the Grand Line. If he were, I'd think he'd have to be stronger than he was when he faced off with Luffy.

as you said shanks was on rogers crew but whitebeard were talking about those days when shanks and mihawk would fight, i got the feeling that was when shanks was still on the roger boat. and arlong i wouldn't make a statement that he wasn't around back then, he was under that warlord guy so he could have been, look at buggy as an example, he has been around and he is relatively weakk from what we have seen, buggy could have gotten stronger since the grandline incomparison to where he was..
any guess on when ace became a pirate??? as far as i am aware he wasn't around when ace was in luffy's town so i am guessing it was more than 7 years ago in the story

Luffy said that Ace left his Hometown 3 years earlier than himself.
