Anyone still wondering how Shanks could be strong enough to be an emperor just look at this weeks chapter.
1st both he and Buggy were apprentices on Roger's ship not that it means a great deal when you look at Buggy.
2nd he duelled with Whitebeard and Mihawk.
3rd his spirit alone was enough to knock out the rookies on Whitebeards crew, not to mention when he and Whitebeard drew the contact split the heavens asunder.
The loss of the arm was obviously the only way he could save Luffy and also looking at the sword, the first chapter, and the way Mihawk acted, his style probably involved a twohanded grip on a single sword which would have been weakened with the loss of his arm.
The house of death is now open and taking all requests.
in support of mpskyo:
the other reason why shanks is one of the yonkou (for you doubters out there) is because Oda-Sensei wants him to be....and this is pretty much a valid reason I reckon...
And how Shanks got to be an Emperor will be a great spinoff too... (or a very long arc filler...)

Shanks looks the real deal I think he has even got over the loss of his arm (power wise) and has just trained loads wih one arm. Also Buggy now seems like a whole different person since the start of the manga. From a comical yet complete loser to now an experienced pirate who was on the pirate kings ship, well and hes still a complete loser.
I would have to disagree with your statement that Shanks have gotten weaker with only 1 arm. I don't think you can completly state that unless the character said so because there are some stories in which a character claims to be stronger because he learned a one hand fighting style that required the user to have only 1 arm.
If Zoro lost an arm, he'd get hella weaker... his strongest tech's need 3 arms to initiate/ complete, so why wouldn't the same thing apply to Shanks??
Answer::
1) If it doesn't, Shanks uses one hand with one sword and that's it.
2) If it does, Shanks uses two hands on 1 sword, or uses nitouryuu or higher to fight.

maybe so, but mangakas dont keep to their rules and laws all the time, some parts have most likely been missed out (although roman zaemons estimations seem correct). i blankly refuse to belive that all the characters have matured that much during a 3 month period. That, or it could be a mistake from Oda, seeing as how HE has been working on it for almost 10 years he forgets that he mentions the time between travels and thus creates things like people growing to their double length in~50 days (i stick with that he just dosent mention time passing sometimes...)
but i guess the only way is to ask Oda himself how its ment to be
edit: ok so i read the entire thread on AP forums and admit my loss in OP facts, howerver i still state it to be an impossibillity and a huge story flaw... especially counting wounds recived (the time it takes to heal them) and maturity of SH and other characters.

IMO Shanks might or might not be stronger than he was before he lost an arm. There have indeed been manga characters who've got stronger because of a disability. Take one of the three yu-yu-hakusho demon emperors (the one who is blind) for example.
And many of you need to stop doubting that Shanks owns. Just think, the 'rookies' on Whitebeard's ship would have to have at least decently high bounties (I'm guessing 50 million +). With just his spirit ALONE, Shanks rendered these guys unconscious. If that doesn't tell you that Shanks is very powerful and fully deserves his title, then you need to stop kidding yourself.
