i find it hard to believe someone who could evenly spar with mihawk would lose an arm so easily.
it had to have been plot induced stupidity.
for one of the 4 emperors, kicking a weak little seakings ass in an instant should be an easy effortless task.

well if you think about it, in ANY manga, the first few chapters will be filled with plot devices, I mean its the only way to start a manga

Not while saving a little kid who can't swim and devoid of weapons. Remember, Seakings are a superhuman opponent. Realistically, any handicap you have could be lethal. Acting as a human shield? Definite handicap.

So it's not a plot device he lost his arm so much as a plot device no one else ever gets seriously maimed.

We have to assume that Shanks wasn't one of the four emperors then, but now, years and years later he could be much stronger than he was when his arm was taken off. Also I don't think Oda wanted to show off Shanks strength so early in the manga.

What makes you people think that brute strength is what got him there? thatīs what is crew is there for.
Itīs his intelligence and cunning what has made him get to where he is

Um... no... not so much, guy. He got there cause of his strength, as with any other emperor. Whitebeard is known as the STRONGEST pirate on the Grand Line, and also in the New World, I'd have to guess. Shanks is there because he's able to keep up with Mihawk, the world's greatest swordsman. (with his good arm... which got bitten off by a pussy sea king [like that cause he got scared by a glare ; possible df power???]).

The whole triad is about power and the balance between those powers.

Though... if Aokiji's the strongest of the ADMIRALS, I wanna see how Luffy deals with the others before him. They may not even be Logia fruit users (I assume that would be because Logia = the fruit of pwnage // strongest type of fruit).

Dude that was 10 YEARS AGO!!!

Shanks might have been shit-ass weak back then compared to what he is now.
(Mihawk would have been comparatively weak then too)

And we don't even know whether Shanks had sailed to the Grand Line at that point of time......

Shanks seemed to be a great pirate even 10 years ago, so maybe he was not one of the 4 emperors yet, but he was not far from it and definitly not weak

    Default Is Shanx that strong?

Yes. He or his crew is very strong - so Oda sensei says - no way to dispute this. But why he lost his arm to a little monster like that? I don't know and, may be, he only get really strong after that.

becoming one of the four emperors does not require personal brute/superhuman strength alone imo, look at whitebeard, yes he does look strong, but look at his CREW.... blackbeard, ace, a big-assed armada.....these are not ordinary folks we are talking about...surely his crew does contribute to what w-beard is now...

the same goes with shanks too......he may not be the strongest in the world....but imo he can go one-on-one with mihawk at least...and his crew must be super too....in which a rookie is worth 94 mill....and the crew is what makes the difference in Grand Line...

whether or not shanks was already one of the four when he first met luffy is still open for debate tho.... I'd like to think he wasn't....
