just read teh new chapter (mangahelpers) and in it luffy uses Gear 3 at the very end and explains it so its basically pumping air into his bones while Gear 2 was into his blood
that explains him getting smaller i guess after peforming the move his body shrinks cuz his bones get smaller and he probably has to slowly regrow it by putting air in it bit by bit
wonder what gear 4 will be
gear 2 = makes him fast
gear 3 = makes him stronger/bigger
maybe gear 4 is a combination of both or something that can make his skin really hard so that he can defend from really hard punches
i wonder if gear 3 has the same side effects as gear 2. as lucci said luffy is shortening his lifespan as he uses gear 2. also gear 3 seems like luffy can use more than once unlike gear 2 which he can only use it for a short amount of time and cant use it for a while
If anything, the frequent use of Gear 3 would probably make his arm tired as shit.
In Gear 2 Luffy used a rather complicated set of physiological processes to gain a boost in speed. In Gear 3 he just went all out Warner Bros.
But anyway, G1 is his flesh, G2 is his blood, G3 is his bones,
G4 might influence his nerves, and cause him to have psychic abilities. G4 vs. Doflamingo :D

I don't remember seeing a gear 1 Luffy, are we just using that to refer to Luffy in the base state?
Giving Luffy psychic abilities would be lame.
Besides, he's too stupid to use 'em properly.
