He gets beat down by an extremely strong opponent, following which he pulls out a new uber-technique and triumphs(or at least overpowers the opponent). He gets injured/exhausted in the end, but that's a formula used in many of Naruto's fights as well. And whether or not it's a 'clean' victory doesn't count as much as how good the fight was to watch; you could likewise argue that Naruto was only getting beat down by Pain and only won because Nagato never intended to kill him and conceded defeat in the end.
