Thread: Free Naruto RPG?

I'm refering to tabletop roleplaying games. Are there any free fanmade Naruto tabletop systems where you can actually play your way from genin to the top, explore the Naruto world and encounter/create new and unique jutsus? It could be cool since the Naruto world is open for that kind of game (and have much freedom) and I'm sure a big part of the fan community are roleplayers. If there are no good free Naruto RPGs, would you want one? I'm experienced with many different games and systems and could create a balanced game system for a Naruto RPG if you people would support the idea.

The basic ideas I have is that it would be mainly set in the time after the kyuubi attack to before Naruto's generation would join the academy. That way the world could be rather static and RPG groups can explore all parts of the world or encounter anyone because they haven't been killed off in the story yet. It would also support different timelines to anytime during the manga's storyline to way back in the Uchiha vs Senju time.

The game system would be a unique one to fit a new way of fighting (ninjutsu fighting and chakra control). I can't give further details on this yet since I only have a few ideas of how it could work. The goal would be to make it easy to learn and use. I can imagine a combination of White Wolf's successes system with other influences.

I'm sure there are already Naruto RPG:s out there but I haven't found anyone to test and I've only heard bad news about those that roam the Internet. If you want me to write this system, please post ideas of how it could work in this thread. It would also be completely free and non-commercial because it's a fanmade game based on a copyrighted world. The finished texts would be uploaded as PDF files and I'd like to use fanart to spice up the pages.

Are there any interest for this project? Would you play it? Would you support it? If not, I won't make it.

It's considered fanwork and will be downloadable by everyone for free. To consider this illegal would be like saying a fan made drawing of Naruto is illegal. The copyright laws refer to spreading copyrighted products for free (like scanlations) or using the copyrighted name (Naruto) to make a profit. Since this is tributed to Kishimoto's work and credits him for the world (+ is not profitable for me), it would not hold up in court. The only thing I'm sure he might have something against with this project is that it might contain some spoilers for those who haven't followed the series yet. I will also use fanmade art for the finished project (and the current Kishi art is only placeholders for the drafts).

I noticed after I had started with the project that there already is a Naruto d20 RPG system out there and I've taken a look at it. I find it too long and not very structured though so it didn't stop me from continuing with it. First draft of character creation is basically complete.

Thanks, I have an early draft ready of the character creation already and I'm working on the chakra/jutsu chapter. If you send me you e-mail in a PM, I'll send you the draft so you can comment on it (and make some suggestions for improvements, add some new features and help me with some writing errors etc.). I've also written a basic 2/3 done character sheet as well as a 2 page intro chapter of the game system so it won't be as confusing. You can't play it yet, but you can basically make a character from what is done.

Is currently unemployed so I have nothing better to do on my days than to write anyway ^^

Meh; i just recently quit my job because they didn't pay me enough. I'll enjoy the free time I have this month and then go back to university. ^^

I would like some Genjutsu ideas though. Those I could find on Narutopia are too few. Any suggestion is appreciated.

If you could make a game that'd be really cool...unfortunately I'm not a gamer (anymore) but I'd be more than happy to introduce some friends to the game if you ever do it - they're somewhat familiar with Naruto.

Will your game be centered around Konoha? If it is, I guess what I would suggest is you make the Ninja Academy a tutorial of sorts for the players...it ties in well with the Narutoverse. Also you should think about the clans in Konoha - will the players graduate from the Academy and then join a clan, or will you randomly assign them a clan? Either way, there'll be people who might, say, favour the Hyuugas or Uchihas and will therefore always choose them or will reset their character till they get what they want.

As for the chakra and jutsu systems...well, I'm guessing chakra would probably function like MP, but since chakra is a combination of physical stamina and spiritual energy...would it be like HP + MP? Don't know much about the game systems so can't give you much input in this, sorry. Genjutsu...I suggest you take what we've seen from the series so far. There are genjutsus used to restrain (this would induce a 'paralysed' state I guess) and there are some used as a mental attack (like Tsukuyomi - maybe it'll incapacitate as well as lower MP?) and some used for concealment (like the black crow genjutsu the Konoha jounins used). With genjutsu I guess it would make sense for only the person on the receiving end to see the illusions, whereas for the caster I supposed you could always put some indication on his opponent to let him know his jutsu's working.

Taijutsu and ninjutsu would be more straightforward for you. I can't wait to see how you'd do something like Amaterasu (if at all). Imagine your character burning whatever he looks at! But that'd be limited by the characters range of view, and I'm assuming that it'll only be as wide as about one box. But I think you could just expand it if you wanted to encompass, say, 3 boxes.

Well, I'm not coding a computer game. I'm writing a tabletop RPG. These are centered around presentation of a campaign made by a game master and the players choose their actions based on set regulations and statistics, using dices to roll the outcome. For those not familiar with that kind of game, it can seem rather vague or complex, but depending on the game master's performance and the enthusiasm of the group, it can seem very visual and be very stimulating as far as creativity goes.

As for the Narutoverse, it's entirely free for the players. They can play anything from a rogue ninja from the Hidden Rain to a mangekyo hotshot of the Uchiha. The only thing I don't have any rules to support is playing as a jinchuuriki.
