Well, I wouldn't have grouped his loss of legs, his anorexia and his rods all to the same incident for a start, especially since the rods have a particular purpose of carrying chakra signals like an antenna.
For the explanation of rods, I would have preferred it to have been a conceived choice for Nagato to construct and implant these into himself in order to control the 6 paths and exact his revenge, not just some jutsu that just so happened to have the side-effect of causing the rods to stick into him.
His anorexia should have been down to a slow progression over the last 20 years of the toll it takes for him to use his ability, as we have seen from the damage it causes him when he over exerts himself. Not just some kind of 5 minute transformation. It's like kishi's waving a magic wand and presenting the end result, it's not believable. I'm surprised I appear to be in the minority who feels this way, but whatever.

Well i did think that a 5-minute transformation is a little implausible, too. but i think that he hadn't fully changed yet by then, it seems more like the beginning to me. I think that it started the process of degenerating him. At that point in the flashback, I think he can still walk and use his powers and everything (that's why he could still lead his gang). I mean, it would be kinda hard to lead if you can't walk and all right? But when he starts to lose more strength (I think it saps his energy and life force or something), he has to hide out somewhere, since he'll be an easier target if he can't move. So it was at that time that he really became "Pain", and decided to hide and use bodies instead.
That's just my guess. So there's more story to him, but we saw what was relevant at this time - how his mindset became the way it is. But by now it's so clear that his motive is revenge, even if he's trying to justify it by saying he's bringing peace. It's so contradictory.
Still, this was a great chapter. Imagine if he didn't summon that huge statue thing - he'd be near invincible. I doubt even Naruto could stand up to him if he had all 6 powers at once...he'd be untouchable, I dare say. With the combination of blocking physical attacks and absorbing chakra and sending that soul-sucking dragon around (I have to say that's so unfair, in his favour), no one could theoretically get near him. Splitting it into 6 would mean more bodies to take out, but it makes each individual one really weak, it seems. Ah well. Looks like having all that power in one body carries a heavy price too. Guess it'd be too overkill if he didn't experience some kind of adverse effect on himself. Newton's third law, people.
Now, I'm hoping they resolve this by next chapter...50% says that Naruto reforms Nagato somehow. In fact, make that 80%.
He must have a tooth on Nagato to have killed all his team that time.
Plus he would take advantage of the situation and the current state of Nagato.
Plus he would appear as a true hero for Konoha's population, except those who are aware that Naruto and his toad crew did all the work.
