^Well, that's possible. Even so, Madara didn't seem to try to come up with excuses about his defeat; he simply said "I was defeated".
Yeah, he seem to have great respect for the 1st, and he did acknowledge he was deafeated. I can't picture the 1st won because of Madara's lack of chakra.
In this pic, from chapter 399, you can see Madara's body is being pierced by a sword, so he lost in a "honest" way..
To me, what made this chapter compelling was how it recasts the image of Sasuke's family.
At first, it seemed like Itachi was favored by Fugaku and Mikoto because of his talent. We thought Sasuke felt neglected because he was inferior to his brother, and wanted to catch up to him. But it turns out that Itachi was a tool in their selfish, short sighted desire to cause a civil war, and Itachi had become distant because he was the lone conscientious objector.
I think Fugaku, at least, realized what was going on with Itachi. The dramatic turnaround in his views--from "you have to be like your brother" to "you truly are my son"--is proof of that. And if he WAS the one who planned the attack, then I wouldn't be surprised if he had killed Itachi to keep the plan going. It's not like he'd have any choice.
Also, I thought it was interesting that Madara said "a child can't get valuable experience from war". It underscored how power and battle dictate his entire existence. Now, I'm wondering what his motivations are, since it sounds like he still wants war.

It's funny you should mention that because it's one of the things I noticed that Madara is trying hard to mask (unintentional pun). I believe he is one of those relics Orochimaru was referring to when Oro was talking about how clans foolishly fought each other suicidally before using their brains. Also, I thought it was interesting that Madara said "a child can't get valuable experience from war". I also believe this trait, coupled with his obvious inferiority complex to Hashirame, that make him too suspicious to even feel fine with allowing his clan to integrate into the village.
Integrating into a village will result in reduction of clan's powers since villages are made up of a collection of clans. If there was no power over the clans, it would basically be a chaotic confederacy.
So the 'powers' and 'freedoms' the Uchihas lost for the most part seem justified to me (granted, there are several that aren't, like the exclusion of the Uchiha in Konoha govt and it's regulation as a police force).

^ I also wonder if Madara inadvertently caused some of that to happen to Uchiha by attacking the first. OTHERWISE, who knows, there might have actually been a chance for an Uchiha Hokage at a later date.
