Yes, I have to agree with you here, most of the Akatsuki members didn't even seem to know about Madara's existence. They are basically being used for specific purposes, all the members who have been killed (aside from Itachi if his death sticks) seem to have been in the dark in terms of what is really going on. Most of the members were a part of Akatsuki for their own reasons, some were probably there to take advantage of the organizations resources, others because some of Akatsuki's goals matched their own. In chapter 329 that very point is discussed amongst a number of the Akatsuki members.

In chapter 364 when Madara is talking with Pain and Konan he says that soon all their goals will be achieved, everything is going according to his plan. As you have said Madara and Pain are probably the only crucial members, they more than likely view the others as being replaceable. Konan and Zetsu are clearly of the more informed but otherwise just seem like assistants to Madara and Pain.

Konon more so probebly because she grew up around nagato...then again, even though nagato had the rin-angan, Jairair knew it wasn't him for some reason or another. Right before he died, he found out the one who is the one in real control so that leads me to believe that it's not Nagato or his other friend. Jeez, i'm killing my brain.
