Itachi is a fool
If Itachi wanted left sauske alive simply so he'd have enough drive to develop his sharingan just to harvest it later, why did'nt he spare more members of his clan. If you wanted to steal the eyes of a sharingan user would'nt you want more to choose from ? Anything could've happened to Sauske while he was on a mission. He could've died and Itachi would've lost his chance to gain the next level of sharingan. He should've left the strongest members of his clan alive just so they would come after him while developing their eyes. If one of them were to to die he'd still have more to pick from. Is there anyone out there that agrees with me ?
Because it has to be your brothers eyes to get the always active mangekyo sharingan. i'm pretty sure they mentioned that
You're right i forgot about that part,but just in case Sauske died and his eyes were lost to me forever I'd settle for any uchias eyes especially if i were going blind. Beggers can't be choosers.
@Daimoon-Not mangekyo, perfect mangekyo.
rico-I guess you could give it a shot, but leaving a group of Uchihas alive to seek vengeance would be even stupider than just leaving Sasuke alive since they could grow together as a group and perhaps even train a person to specifically take on Itachi.
I wonder if this works the same for sisters.
Yes, this is why. In chapter 386, Itachi talks about how many sacrifices piled up over the years in the Uchiha clan as members attempted to obtain higher levels of sharingan but simply gaining another members eyes did not equate to gaining the power. I believe this is precisely why only Madara obtained the final Mangekyou sharingan for only he took the eyes of his brother. Others likely attempted it but on fellow members of the clan hence it didn't produce the results. You are correct in stating that it was a risk, however, I believe that was largely what was behind his statement "Foolish brother, if you want to kill me, hate me, detest me, run, run and survive in the most detestable of ways." Sasuke has always been desperate to survive until he could kill Itachi, his hate not only made him stronger but kept him alive. I believe Itachi counted on this perhaps to the point where he was willing to make the gamble. One could argue that Itachi could have simple stayed with Sasuke and tried to help him grow, much as was the case with Madara who competed with his brother. Looking at the Sasuke of the past though, I think Itachi realized that Sasuke was highly unlikely to obtain it without extreme motivation. Sasuke was way behind Itachi at an early age, Itachi had already mastered the Sharingan and graduated from the academy by the same age Sasuke was granted entrance to it. Sasuke needed the hate to force him to gain power and turn him cold. Also, I think it is highly likely that dangerous experiences are exactly what is needed to awaken the sharingan's power to begin with. Pretty much ever time I can think of that someone has awakened or upgraded their sharingan in the series it has been it a battle that could easily result in death. When you are living in a world where fighting for your life is a regular occurrence nothing is a sure thing.

I think Itachi slaughtered his whole clan to produce the most compatible eyes in Sasuke (whom he probably thought had potential) by driving him with hatred. If he hadn't done so, another MS user probably wouldn't have sprung from the clan in his lifetime.
It should also be noted that he was also already suspected to be capable of doing malicious actions against his fellow clan members (he was the primary suspect for killing Uchiha Shisui). If he didn't act on it, Konoha's police would have built a case against him, and would have formed a team to arrest him (most probably Uchiha clan members as well, since sharingan is the best weapon against sharingan).
Furthermore, he only needed one replacement. If it weren't the case, Madara himself would have probably stopped Itachi from exterminating his unwilling donors.
Just my grain of salt tho ^^
Indeed. Whats worse, his popularity, whether positive or negative to the fans, isn't the product of genjutsu. So it's safe to say that another thread on itachi would be started later on... >_<

So the real question is Madara a fool for doing what he did by getting Itachi involved in their clan cleansing.
Since Madara was the one responsible for the various major events that happened in the Naruto timeline, no, I dont think he is a fool.
I mean seriously do you really think Madara would just allow Itachi to wipe out the clan he found like that unless there was something so special so valuable like the ultimate sharingan for example that only itachi or sasuke can obtain.
We already know that Itachi sees Madara as a worthless shell of his former great self, hence it makes sense to suggest that Madara really isnt all that powerful as he is supposed to be, perhaps not even able to use his MS fully, who knows. We also know that Madara is very interested in the outcome of the Sasuke vs Itachi battle, so maybe there is something in it for him
