I concur that there's a serious continuity gap between this chapter and the last one. What barrier? When did Jiraiya set up a barrier and when did Paine penetrate it? Whatever; it's not like we can't work out what's going on anyway.

There is exactly ONE way Jiraiya can survive this: Paine deals him a "deathblow" and watches as Jiraiya's "corpse" floats off down the river. At the end of the manga, after it's all over and the bad guys are all beaten, Jiraiya miraculously appears alive out of nowhere, amazing everyone who thought he was dead, tearful reunion time etc. It sucks, but that's the only possibility. Anything else and he's dead, which is frankly far more likely.

I think there's actually quite a good chance Paine will take Jiraiya's body to replace the one Jiraiya sent to Tsunade. Can you imagine the effect it would have on Naruto when Paine revealed it to him? It'd be the perfect trigger to unleash his ULTIMATE kyuubi rage (at least 8 tails), which would make a perfect climax to the series. Besides, if he doesn't replace his missing body he's going to suffer a considerable loss of power, which is unacceptable for an ultimate (or near-ultimate) bad guy at this stage of the series.

Jiraiya is going to die without revealing the full secret of Paine, but I imagine Tsunade will discover it after his death by examining the body Ma brings back for her. I believe it has something to do with the black studs/spikes on the bodies, given their apparent properties seen in this chapter. Although at this stage I can't even guess at the significance of all 6 of Paine's bodies being ninja that Jiraiya specifically has met before.

Top ten reasons why NaruHina will become canon:
    7. Naruto saw Hinata dancing naked in a waterfall, and he totally digs that.
    10. Hinata has giant boobies.

His name romanized is "Pein" but its stupid looking so I call him "Pain" since has same pronunciation and its more fitting.. but you called him "PAINE" 5 times. This Max is from another place!

The gap was probably there so "ma" tell Tsunade when she arrive, and now the manga will switch over to sasuke vs itachi for a while leaving us pretty much dead on the water

    As usual.
I find this habit extremely annoying now. But I guess its better than just focusing on one side.

It sounds about right with Kishi leaving us hangin :/ It was nice to see a conclusion to the battle, even though it wasn't what I hoped for. But this manga have too many 'fakeouts' to I can accept that Pein is looking down on a dead Jiraiya.

gee, so Jiraiya purpose is to find out who pain is, and hopefully the secret to defeat him, otherwise, what is the big deal! And it might took him his life just to realize Pain was one of his students (and he got that before the fight). This reminds me of Asuma and Hindan. Its a bit retarded how Jiraiya keep wondering stuff about these bodies, instead of a simple "well, the pain i know arent these guys, i need to find out where is the real pain and how he control these bodies" or "gee , i dont think i can defeat pain on my own, let go and get more ppl". Given he already know that pain was that dark hair student, and as a sanin, he must have heard of tons of justsus that allow people to control dead bodies (Oro, hello!)....I guess Kishi's plot-no-justsu is always unsatisfying. he tries to create depth and mysteries that aint necessary to the plot. Maybe he never heard of K.I.S.S.
Killing time while waiting for the next chapter. OnePiece, that is.

^These secrets and mysteries are what make the plot interesting. And this is way different from the Asuma/Hidan fight because Jiraiya figured out the true identity of Pain, who isn't one of his students like he thought at the start of the fight. But before the fight, he had no idea Pain was related to his students. So the givens you mention don't make sense.

Look, the secret of Paine is simple (and I'll spell his damn name any damn way I like). After he defeats a powerful ninja, he extends his consciousness into the body and becomes that ninja, accepting it into a sort of group consciousness. In effect, all 6 of them ARE Paine at once- he doesn't 'control' them or anything so crude. I imagine he specifically tuned each of his bodies to serve a different purpose after he acquired them. Of course, I figure most people have worked this out already.

The reason it's so hard for Jiraiya to figure out is that, even though it may not seem like a big deal to manga readers like us (who are aware that anything can happen in fiction), to someone like Jiraiya who has to live within the bounds of reality set out by the manga, it's an idea that simply beggars belief. You have to admit that even after we've dealt with ancient powerful demons contained in human forms, reanimating the dead and perpetual reincarnation through bodily possession, the idea of a person who can be 6 different people at once is definitely the most far-out idea Kishimoto has written into the series yet and it's no surprise that even someone as well-travelled as Jiraiya would have trouble believing it.

Look, you are speculating like the rest of us.This difference of control v acquisition/absorption you point out is unsupported. Considering the fact that the 6 Pain's we saw were dead (using Yahiko as the standard), it would imply that it is not a completely cooperative takeover. At this point, we have no idea of its truth. The rest of the stuff was pretty much understood

if Pain was so intent on gathering strong shinobi, then why didn't he pick up that Hanzou guy? And i doubt he would mind if he was old, becasue i'm pretty sure that old people are still pretty powerful( look at the 3rd hokage) adn Hanzou was even more legendary than teh 3rd
