I did a quick wiki before writing this. So the short version is: Earth, Water, Wind, Fire, Void, and they seems to correspond to the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, plasma, and void, for me, thats the ultimate state of matter, nothing.
its not suprise that ppl thnk wood would be an element, it was in some ancient culture, for sure not in Naruto. Earth isnt a element in the scientific sense either (so its not technically 'basic"), same for fire, water, wind, and lightning. the most basic ones are fire, which is heat, im not big in chemistry, but heat seems to require a medium (particles), and lightning is basically charges, still they aint elements. Just need to get that out.
So, I guess these elements in naruto have more to do with engery (wind power. etc.), but this excludes earth element, cause its pretty static, engery usually correspond to motion. I am trying to get to the essential aspect of each element in hope of coming up with the 6th. I guess the safest way is to go back, its seems like any state of matter, can be used as a weapon, so this make sense for all elements so far, also i can see why lightning is an element in naruto, but not in classical science, cause back then they wasnt awared of the existence of electron (this too, can be considered a state of matter in some sense). The real trouble is how the element was named, basically, each name is only representive. For instance, instead of using 'solid' as a name, its more comfortable to use 'earth', water for liquid, wind for air, lightning for charge. That is why we can say metal is the same as earth for they are both solid. The result of mixing elements is harder to make sense; wood is solid too, but it also consists of water....so really i rather not think further. Kishi can be creative, or bull, about this.
This lead me to think that the sixth element can be light, cause i cant conceive another state of matter after Charge, except Photon, which isnt a stretch if you realize what 'matter' really is. So yeah, Light can be the sixth element if Kishi follow this exact logic. A slight difference can lead to completely different element. For sure you can be creative using light as in battle (solar flare, illusion, lightbeam attack (this is where kamehameha comes in, j/k)). So you see im not even creative yet. Darkness cant be an element with this logic, and for sure, if you can control light, you can create darkness (removal of light). And if you're really good, just remove light coming to ur enemy's eyes, this way the enemy is in complete darkness, but you can see everything...

Killing time while waiting for the next chapter. OnePiece, that is.
