The plot is getting more interesting now. Naruto's clone found Sasuke yet Sasuke stabbed through it without a word. I guess this pretty much shows that Sasuke does not want to re-join Konoha at all (at less not until he kills itachi anyway). Sasuke was a little reckless for not taking a detour when Karin said that she sensed a lot of people with identical Chakra; he should have figured out it was Naruto and his shadow clones were all around him. Hm... on the other hand, may be he is confident that Naruto is not strong enough to stop him at all and decides to ignore him?
Anyway, I do wonder why Naruto wants to drag him back to Konaha so badly. It is true that they were like brothers before, but doesn't he realize Sasuke has a goal to accomplish and has no time to enjoy life?
I bet Naruto will be delighted to know that Sasuke is going to the Uchiha base in Konoha as Itachi instructed. He would even volunteer to help so that Sasuke may consider staying afterwards.
Hm... about Naruto 372, I have a feeling that there will be a lot of flashbacks about Jaraiya's past during the battle, given that he is about to deal with Pain and Nonan. Apparently, they were teacher and students in the past so it is likely that we will learn more about Pain and Nonan when they fight.

If Sasuke came back, I was thinking Naruto would leave Konoha for a bit (maybe with Yamato) to do some Kyuubi training in a deserted place.

I do not want Sasuke to come back. Not at all. It contradicts much of what has happened in the story, would smack of rampant idealist bullshit, and destroys any of the potential for the story if he isn’t saved.

Using youthful idealism to change the world around you is the most common theme of shonen series. It’s been there in every one that I’ve read, directly or indirectly, from One Piece to Death Note. Seeing people with strong ideals overcome the obstacles thrown at them is the reason I read this stuff—and what made Naruto work for me, more than anything else, has been the way Kishi did that through Naruto himself.

But Naruto’s M.O. has completely shifted in Part 2, from “proving my worth by becoming Hokage” to “saving Sasuke”. It’s flown in the face of one of the main themes of the series; Naruto changing people’s lives for the better through sheer willpower. That change in focus has taken away much of the story’s original appeal, so why has Kishimoto done it?

I think Kishi is setting up Naruto for a huge psychological jolt, that’ll get him back on the road to becoming Hokage in a totally different context from before. The whole isolation angle won’t work now, because he’s on good terms with everyone in Konoha and they all believe in his strength. So my idea is that Sasuke will be sacrificed, and that his death will be used as a trigger to change Naruto’s outlook on life. That, I believe, is desperately needed if Naruto wants to become Hokage.

Naruto has only shown us that he has the potential to become as strong as a Hokage. He hasn’t shown any capacity for the mental or emotional aspect of the job. That, I believe, has been lost in the noise of how weak he is compared to Sasuke and how boring his role in the story has been—because even if he had complete control of the Kyuubi and could beat Madara, I still wouldn’t want him as my commander.

He won’t have room to pursue such selfish aims as the Hokage. He always has to consider what’s best for the village, and deal with the political and military implications of every decision that he makes. To be able to do that, he needs the mental fortitude to sacrifice those under them for the sake of his country, and deal with the loss of those close to him in the constant conflicts keeping the economy afloat. The only thing I could see doing that for sure would be losing his best friend, in spite of all of his efforts, because it would prove more than anything else what being a shinobi encompasses.

That coincides quite cleanly with how Sasuke has been portrayed. At this point, I can’t for the life of me imagine Sasuke going back willingly, but I’ve believed that since he left.

Itachi has been the all-encompassing reason for Sasuke’s very existence from the beginning. For Itachi, Sasuke abandoned his village, aligned himself with the one who tried to destroy it, and offered his very body to him just for the sake of vengeance. The reason he tried to kill Naruto at the Valley of The End was Itachi, and the reason he gave up in the end was, again, Itachi. Even their friendship is entwined and perverted by what Itachi did. He’s shown time and again that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to kill Itachi, regardless of the consequences. It just wouldn’t make sense if he got to go back, unless he was locked up as soon as he got there and never let out.

So I think Kishi has set up Sasuke to be un-healable. And I think he wants Naruto to try and save Sasuke only to lose him in the end. That will provide him with a new, much more viable incentive to become Hokage; through gaining the title, he’d do his best to keep the peace in the continent so no one would have to go through what he went through. To me, wanting to prevent that from happening would be a much better motivator than beating Sasuke, and it would tie things up for Naruto in a very satisfying way.

That’s what I want to see come out of their last confrontation, rather than Sasuke being saved.

^That was the greatest essay about Naruto and Sasuke ever. You make a really good point there.

However, the reason you listed for Sasuke not going home is that he has to kill Itachi. You haven't considered what Sasuke will do when Itachi is dead. But I think that is a discussion for another thread, which I will create now.

    ^ Shit, I forgot!

Well...that ties into my belief that Sasuke won’t get to kill Itachi. He's his only motivation, so the last fight with Naruto will be pointless if he gets vengence. But at the same time, if the confrontation occurred before he fights Itachi, then he’d either be forced back to Konoha before escaping again or he'd win, kill Itachi, and still face Naruto without any drive. Kishi would be writing himself into a catch-22 if he wants Sasuke to succeed.

If he can even fight Itachi, then I imagine Madara coming in and stealing the kill just to screw things up worse. Then he could bring all that extra anger and hatred into the final confrontation against Naruto—which would kick ass.

I say that because now that Madara is around, Sasuke is no longer needed to keep the clan going. It's strictly a personal vendetta now. And the Itachi issue is what made Sasuke so intriguing in the first place; without it, he’s just another cocky, antisocial “boy genius.” There's no viability in Itachi being killed by him anymore, plot-wise.

Oh, and thank you very much.

Naruto kills Itachi instead and sasuke becomes uber pissed. He comes after Naruto's life by heading straight into Konoha just like Naruto wanted and everyone lies in ambush for him. Sasuke is caught under Gamabunta's bottom and undergoes psychiatric treatment with Naruto to resolve things.

On a more serious note, I think the series might end with naruto and sasuke fighting each other to the end to determine who is stronger. They really were competitive when they were kids I don't see that changing as adults. The moment Naruto gets back Sasuke he'll beat him to a pulp and Sasuke might let himself get punched a few times so his buddy can release the pent up anger and stress. Then proceed with the fight to see if Naruto might be worthy of being acknowledge by Sasuke.

Eh, I bet they'll all just die with only supporting characters alive as sasuke and naruto both get killed. Anyways Kishi is just an ordinary guy why do you expect so much and criticize how he writes the plot you know writing for a long time sometimes you lose ideas I mean hes kept you up with Naruto for a long time so why not just stop saying hes losing his touch.

I personally would love to see Orochimaru resurface in Sasuke after beating his brother (and perhaps getting some girl pregnant). He really does have no goals after achieving his brother's death, and the conditions of Orochimaru's death are still vague.
