Thread: Is Itachi evil?

This is my first thread created so feel free to crush it, but I'm not so sure that Itachi is evil. Everyone says that he destroyed the Uchiha clan, but I don't remember them ever showing him kill anyone. Sasuke does go into his parents room and they are dead and Itachi is there. It does seem like Itachi kills them as he uses his Sharingan on his kid brother and (if I remember he tells Sasuke that he killed them) so Sasuke believes that he killed the entire clan. With the reveal of Madara Uchiha, though, I'm not too sure that Itachi is evil.

My main reason for thinking this is *(ch. 366 spoiler)* the fact that he doesn't fight Naruto and appears before Sasuke of his own will. I mean isn't Naruto the jinchuuriki that Itachi is supposed to capture? Wouldn't a lone and Jiraiya-less Naruto be especially vulnerable? Now before anyone brings up that the kyuubi is supposed to be the last jinchuuriki captured, and that therefore Naruto has to be last captured I ask you this. Are you telling me that Akatsuki doesn't have a prison? Or at the very least a broom closet to store him until they get the rest?

So here is my theory: Itachi learns of Madara's plans to destroy the Uchiha clan and decides that he isn't strong enough. He cuts off his relationship to his previously close younger brother and the rest of his family. In order to increase the power of his Sharingan (and fight Madara) he kills his best friend as he believes that this is the only way to do it, and since it would save the rest of the clan(greater good and all that). His plan fails and the clan is destroyed (I don't know why, maybe he loses to Madara, maybe he oversleeps) but he gets there before Sasuke. Knowing that Sasuke will eventually seek revenge against Madara, and believing that Sasuke will never be able defeat Madara, Itachi makes Sasuke believe that he killed everyone. By doing this he can gauge Sasuke's strength (since Sasuke will be attacking him), as well as protect Sasuke(since Itachi can choose to not kill Sasuke, but Madara might not be as generous). Everyone thinks that Itachi doesn't kill Sasuke because of arrogance or a guilty conscience, but why isn't it possible that it's out of love?

So anyway these are just a few thoughts that I had and yes I am aware that it's not a godly theory but I just wanted to get people's thoughts. Feel free to poke as many holes in it as you like.

You do realize that theres already a topic talking about whether he killed his clan, I can understand some people not using the search (because its so hard -_-) but its on the first page of threads.

I realize that this thread is slightly different because its asking if hes evil or not but whether he is evil is pretty much directly related to whether he killed his clan hence the uselessness of this topic..

He is for sure a bad guy, but I think he has some good sides that he's hiding from his companions. I think he cares for Sasuke, and I think that will show more and more in the upcoming chapters. I also think he killed the clan, but I don't think he was alone doing so. Someone ordered him to, and he had to do it for reason unknown.

actually i dont believe itachi is evil. i am open to the theory of itachi not killing his clan.

however, in the latest manga chap im more inclined to believe he really isnt as evil as it was portrayed in the beginning. when he met up with naruto, he only wanted to talk, he may have wanted to explain his intentions on why he betrayed is brother (which brings us back full circle to the clan slaughter). who may have killed the clan members (his admittance to it or the real person behind the incident). maybe itachi already knows the identity of tobi (maybe tobi is his best friend, who isnt dead!!). and why his actions on causing his brother to seek power was vital (the whole tobi madara thing or to become strong enough to control and kill the huge statue puppet with all the tail demons). or maybe he just wanted to say a few parting words before he sacrificed himself (he fights sasuke in order to see his improvement and potential, maybe even showing him a few pointers, thus resulting in his death.) like the akatsuki plan or some sob brotherly mushy mushy poop.

but the one thing that got to me was jiraya. how the bloody hell does he know practically everything that goes on with the akatsuki. many suggested that he may be in line with them. but seeing how itachi approached naruto, i have a strong feeling itachi may have been one of the sources. he could have used his genjitsu to cover up his prescence so no one would notice, or took on the form of someone else in order to give out the info (maybe to hide his identity so that he can deal with this whole akatsuki main leader tobi thing). or he really is on a mission, which only the sandaime and jiraya knew off in order to protect sasuke and the village. he may have joined the akatsuki in order to track, keep an eye on the main leader (tobi), and protect his bro. and in this... use the situation to make his brother powerdful enough to activate the sharingan to its full potential, in order to destroy the akatsuki's monster machine.

bah!! so many theories and unanswered questions. but yea, bottom line, i dont really believe itachi is as bad as he is portrayed.

Killing people or mass murder is no indication of beeing evil.

all that matters is the reason why he killed them. if he had a good reason, i wouldnt consider him evil.

since his reason is unknown, we dont know if he's evil

I really don't think he's evil, I mean, he's just carrying out orders given to him by his superiors.

He's not evil he just showed his lil bro how to stab his parents about 10 times and then beats the shit out of him. Then he kills his best friend for Mangekyou Sharingan. Undenyable evidence that he is the opposite of evil.(P.S. I think he didn't fight Naruto because Pein was coming to get Naruto not sure...)

About Itachi killing the clan etc, what I really wanna know is what did Itachi tell Sasuke to find under the 7(or whatever number)th tatami mat?? They never told us did they..? If that had the real answer to why the whole clan is dead (where Itachi wasnt the killer), perhaps Sasuke has just been in denial this whole time, lol. Otherwise.. what the heck was under that mat...
