Tsunade was bound by her fears at the time and Jiraiya had no chakra... it wasnt a fair fight. However you did see Oro get his ass kicked as soon as the playing field was leveled.

itachi and kisame are afraid of jiraiya
sasuke defeated orochimaru (even tho it was when he was weak)
    this is um...very not matching.
~Jiraiya didn't have control of his Chakra
~Itachi & Kisame didn't want the situation to turn out to be a huge fight

    No.

^it's also like jankenpon (rocks papers scissors) imo... where one can beat the other... it's all a matter of techniques and fighting styles...

and Itachi never really "fought" Orochimaru. Itatchi just shut Orochi up with one move, thats not what I would call a decisive battle.

    Well, ask yourself this:

Why the hell would Jiraiya give a damn about Itachi?

Only thing I've ever noticed him take interest in was Akatsuki as a whole and Orochimaru. Now that Orochimaru is out of the scene for the moment. And a team is hunting after Itachi in the first place. He probably knows that he should leave it in the hands of his fellow comrades.

Most likely, with that in mind he's looking into other things. Also that's the Hokage's order for Itachi to be caught. Though Jiraiya is a Konoha Ninja, he is his own entity. Meaning, he does his own thing. But when he is "assigned" a mission he'll probably do it on his own or only if needed, another high ranking jonin. But usually he goes it alone.

Depends on how you want to debate it really. Realistically, Naruto is the main character, not Jiraiya. Plot-wise, Jiraiya is more interested in staying alive than in risking his life. We've only seen Jiraiya risk his life once, for Naruto, and that was because he was alone and defenseless against Akatsuki members Itachi and Kisame. Why did Itachi and Kisame leave? Were they threatened by Jiraiya? Did they really think Jiraiya would win? Honestly, I don't think so. Jiraiya is old, and his chakra is probably weakened compared to when he was younger, but he would still put up a good fight, since he is experienced. I think Itachi and Kisame were just lazy and didn't want to get into a fight that they knew would drain them both, even if they were sure of victory. Plus, they would make a lot of noise and bring alot of attention to themselves and their organization if they continued the fight. Remember, at this point in the story, Akatsuki is supposed to be relatively secret.

Jiraiya, we know, sees himself in Naruto a little bit, but not enough for him to want to act as a father figure and protect him all the time. With so many people with him, and the nine tails protecting him, Jiraiya knows that Naruto will be okay, and at least survive. He probably wants to spread his influence elsewhere-- maybe gathering more information about other members of Akatsuki and where they're hiding.

Honestly, I'd like to see more of Jiraiya. He's my favorite character. But I understand why he doesn't have a more active role in the series. He's a Master type of character-- never really fights, but is wise and imparts alot of knowledge to the main character and side-kicks. Granted, he's not really the ideal Master-type, since he's perverted, but it follows the same generic guidelines.

well, itz not like orochimaru was fighting with a big advantage. he couldn't perform any seals -- he was doing everything with his stretching neck and tongue.. he was at an even more disadvantage in my opinion.
