yeah .....but i meant army with "standard chakra" ....like a regular army but with chakra capabilities .......like those in avatar

@ irecinius : i didnt know about the 4th hokage ending any wars ....i know that the first fought in the great ninja wars though

it wasn't obliterated... obliterated means totally destroyed, gone...
in a war of similar types of troops/weapons, both parties will have to suffer casualties... i'd say about 50% of konoha's military capability (at most) was lost in that battle, as for otto who was almost wiped out.. and suna had to start building up their army too..

and i'd like to correct you on something, the job of Tsunade when she became the 5th was to distribute jobs evenly to different konoha shinobi, so that they "won't look like they lost their edge" during Orochi's attack... otherwise if they were obliterated as you say, they wont be able to missions would they?

The Fourth Hokage (四代目火影, Yondaime Hokage?), also known as "The Leaf's Yellow Flash" (木ノ葉の黄色い閃光, Konoha no Kīroi Senkō?), was the brave ninja responsible for sealing the demon fox inside Naruto Uzumaki. He is said to be the greatest ninja Konoha had ever produced. Though his skills in combat go largely unwitnessed, he was considered dangerous enough that a flee-on-sight order was given in regards to him during the Third Ninja War. Before performing the seal on the demon fox, the Fourth said that he did not want Naruto to be viewed as the container of a monster, but as a hero who saved the village from annihilation. This request, however, was not honored by the villagers, who still held much resentment for the demon fox. He was a student of Jiraiya along with two other unknown Genin, and was the sensei of Kakashi Hatake, Obito Uchiha, and Rin.
i think wikipedia is a passable source for this information

^ hmmm... good question... i have no idea to tell you the truth, but taking into account the land area and the desirability of living conditions in the country of fire, wouldsn't it suffice to say that they "may" have a sizable amount of shinobi? but of course we're talking about quantity here...

Konoha lacks a proper standing army. This doesn't mean that they're incapable of organizing military forces, it simply means that they have to mobilize for war first.

Actually, as far as we've seen, it's more like Konoha lacks a proper system of governance. Basically they operate like a mercenary band that happens to have a permanent base of operations.

Just imagine Naruto's 9999 Clones fighting against a 1000 men army, or the old Gaara against a few hundred, so I guess a single Ninja can take out armies sometimes.

^What is the second village Konoha took down aside from Sand village? And was Konoha's ninjas really obliterated during the Sound raid? I only watched the anime for that part of the storyline, and they only showed the jounins fighting and Naruto's team. No mention of the other genin or chuunin during that time.

konoha defeated the rock country in the 3rd great ninja war i think it was called. but yea, konoha wasnt really obliterated when the sound invaded. Not many konoha shinobi died if any at all (i think i remember 2 or 3 getting killed in the manga)
