yes, they are from the kyubi, but as we have seen recently Naruto had them even before he was implanted with the kyubi. You could say that it's the result of being born from his mother who had the kyubi inside her at the time, and some kind of genetic abnormality was created, but In my opinion, Kishimoto just didn't think about the whiskers when he was drawing Naruto as a baby. He was simply telling a story of the main character and wanted the character to be recognisable to the readers. Without the whiskers, it simply doesn't look like naruto, readers would probably be like 'who is that?'. So I reckon it's an oversight by kishi, or something he just went with for storytelling purposes.

After Naruto was born, right before the fox was sealed in him. Does it really need to go any further than this?

I think it's just a mark that kishimoto deliberately put on naruto to distinguish and differentiate him from his parentage since he looks a bit like Minato. Same goes with the other characters in the story: Asuma and the Third Hokage, Kakashi and his dad (when he got mistaken at the Sand Village), etc. I think there's no other meaning that this.

So he put those marks on Naruto so we could distinguish him from his father (who is explained to have only gave his "hair" to Naruto) 400 chapters later?

    1. He got scratched by a Tiger right after he was born.
    2. The kyuubi spirit-scratched him

    Mystery Solved.

OK so. I didn't want to respond in this thread cause it was pretty lame and didn't seem to ask anything relevant or anything that I had even cared about. I'm just going to put an end to this.

Prophecy-knowledge of the future (usually said to be obtained from a divine source).

Naruto is the child of prophecy. His mother, Kushina, just so happens to be the jinchuuriki.

Boom jinchuuriki has an abnormally strong child with fox still inside her. We don't know but we can assume, since Naruto had the marks before he got the fox, that Kushina's bijuu status affected Naruto in pregnancy.

Also, about the lines on strong characters faces. Chakra could very well alter your body if it's powerful enough. Think of the effects chakra can do to enhance the users body. If it was powerful enough why wouldn't it start to show.

So basically Naruto may or may not have had some kind of markings to indicate his prowess without the kyuubi.
The fact that the kyuubi was probably affecting him during birth helps the case for the markings to be shaped like whiskers.

Does anyone think the womb can protect a baby from internal chakra?
