i think Gaara getting goody is nice, but turning back into a psychopath again would better XD heck, that would be a nice part of an arc by itself!

i'd love to see him as an anti-hero, daz all.

However, this goes completly against Garra's charchter is a psychopath, and psychopaths (along with Sex offenders, but that is another story) are incapable of reforming even with psychiatric treatment.

Signs that Garra is a psychsociopath during the Chunin Exam saga are clear cut. He is bloodthirsty, and kills for no reason. Finally, he is unable to control his bloodlust and is unable to hold himself back. Just about all of the other villans in the series have REASONS, however depraved, for their murders, and killings. Garra, however, does not. Basically, in reality Orochimaru (provided all off those jokes about him being a pedophile aren't true *LOL*) would stand a better chance of reforming then Garra.
I find it amazing that you can conclude that Gaara is a psychopath given the fact that you have only seen a few signs. Real diagnoses aren't so simple especially when someone is in a position such as Gaara.

First Gaara has a supernatural entity inside him that exerts some control, second he is a soldier where killing is expected.

Most importantly Gaara has clear reasons for why he is killing people. He does it because he is lonely and has no one and believes he will always be that way, a kind of loneliness so deep most people can't even understand it. When he kills someone he is "taking away" what they have.

Unlike psychopaths Gaara feels like he is doing something wrong many times such as when Guy helps Lee and when Sakura defends Sasuke. He has moments of remorse here and then quickly pushes them behind him. He also stops himself when Guy intervenes, not because he is afraid but because of what it means.

To answer the question, Gaara HAD to reform.

Why? Naruto's true power is not ninja arts, but the ability to -move- people, to rally them, to make them see more than what they currently are. Inspiration, revelation to purpose.

Gaara had to be reformed in order to show the true extent of this ability. Same will happen with Sasuke.

he is an example of the moral lesson of the story...
to be strong and having a good reason to live is by having someone to protect...

kakashi said that naruto has the power to have friends from just fighting...
meaning he could change someones idealogy...

Well,it s hard to say but this is a manga without many logic,so maybe gaara should travel for 10 years alone lol.

    Ow jesus, my head spun...

Anyway, I'm not up to talk to my Psychiatry friend (its like you are on a consult with one...)

But from the flash backs, Gaara wasn't bad or anything, more then it he was sorry for what he did.

So I do belive that his Biju had great influence on his social behavior.
What could have happened is another mind developing, now that he can rest without the worry of shukaku going nuts and killing everybody, he probally can control his impulses or urges, and be what we consider 'reformed'.

Um, Gaara does justify his early bloodlust. Since people constantly tried to assasinate him as a child, he justifies fighting and killing others by saying their death's confirm his existence. Though this is a harsh sentiment, it does make sense for Gaara's early views.
As for not holding himself back, outside of the incident when he tried to attack Sasuke( or was it Rock Lee?) in the hospital, he never starts any of the fights outside of the Chuunin exams on his own. In reality, Naruto and Sasuke have provoked more fights than Gaara has.

I think Gaara's harsh attitudes and actions are more a result of the constant alienation from all of his fellow villagers and family. When Naruto empathizes with Gaara, its the first time Gaara feels like he is legitemately accepted and the constant pressure an loneliness he felt was alleviated. Because Naruto not only accepts Gaara, but becomes a friend to Gaara and shows Gaara a better way to overcome his loneliness and sadness than through hateful fighting, Gaara changed.
In short, I believe Gaara's extreme hostility was more a result of his constant loneliness than the emotional trauma he was put through by his village, uncle, and father.

I believe it's gaara not garra, but oh well, this is a shounen so everything is possible, and the bad guys always turn good or die in the end, so just deal with it.
