I agree with the blackmailing. I think AL put Itachi in a corner.

Makes perfect sense to me. It would also explain why AL lets a rookie talk back to him while he's strict on Itachi cuz of Itachi's hesitation at certain times. Furthermore, it shows why Itachi subliminally eggs Sasuke on becoming stronger. I'm starting to think the 1st guy with Mangekyou (the one itachi mentioned) is AL...but I still wont deny the 4th having a weird connection to Akatsuki.

You know we could just as easily sed why any of the members joined the group or go even gone even deeper and say why anyone joins anything.. But the truth is we won't know until the person ses so or in this case the writer puts it in the story as a plot twist...

Isent it obvious that itachi wants the Kyuubi, so that he can unlock the founder of the Uchiha clan. By doing this he will use his physical body as a container for the founder, the God in other words. The theory that ive read earlier at Narutofan.com (forgive me for doing that:P ) is that the founder of the uchiha clan, the god as they say go sealed by his son which had mad a pact with Kyuubi. The thing was that he dident have enough chakra to beat his father, the god. so he made a deal to be able to. So when he was sealed, the secret was hid in the unknown chamber in uchihas chamber underneath the floor, as itatchi let Sasuke know about. The place where you will learn about Magekyou sharingan. And as i read onwards, i figured out that they need 3 magekyou sharingans AND kyuubis chakra to unleasht this guy. So Itatchis goals it to get Kyuubi and his brother to get magekyou sharinigan. Henche he said that there are now two others with it and sasuke will be the third to achiev it. When that happens they will be able to do it.

This is true, but with the evidence given so far in the series, these assumptions are the closest thing to a real, [and possibly correct] theory.
Its not like we are guessing why Kisame joined, as we have no shown events that hint towards. We could easily say that "kisame joined because the AL has a cure for his ugliness." But this would be stupid because we have nothing to prove this fact.
