I'm thinking it was wind. Kakashi did say he wanted to put some chakra into it, and the only thing that would make sense is to put wind in a swirling ball

Sure we got a spirinling ball.. lets add some WIND
Fire? who the heck would use fire..
Fireball sure is something so rare that only most genius would think of that..

I never heard of FireBall, Lightning Ball... wind ball? most common thing ever.

Sorry but WIND is not the most obivious, Fire and Lightning are the most common anywhere.
Ah! But this is naruto! well then this strengten even more my point, Wind is a rare element, as stated by Kakashi or whoever. (Only asuma has afinity with it... know anyone else? Maybe Gaara's sister)

Also as Kakashi explained, Yondaime created Rasengan because that is the apice of Chackra manipulation, not because (Lets create a spining ball to add wind on it)

He first created the ball, then he tried to add whatever element to it, he did not create the ball thinking on any particular element.

well kakashi said that he tried to mix rasengan with his lighting chakra but he wasnt able to achieve that so he then created chidori/raikiri.

but yeah wind chakra is more likely to be the fourths nature chakra since theres an awfull lot of similarities between him and naruto (also since the fourths was an amasing shinobi he could have been able to use more than one type of chakra but he probably was more akin to wind chakra)

I belive he first got to the point of "extreme chackra manipulation" Rasengan, THEN he tried to add any element and he couldn't, neither could Kakashi..

Yondaime thinks of a new jutsu...
Deadly, low chakra usage, easy done (no hand seals) probally because he had no time to do them at godlike speed.

then he comes and create the Rasengan, the extreeme level of manipulation
Self Sustaining, deadly ball...
THEN he tries to add his element to it..
Also There is the "it can't be earth because would be spinning rocks!" why?
Who said that earth has to aways be rocks?

How about a earth rasengan when shoot directly into the ground would create a huge canyon? Maybe a earthquake..
Water? Super compress it and throw at lightspeed?
I could go on with thousands of theories, from Simple Wind Rasengan to a Black Hole!

I seriously don't see where this translate into wind element, thats all. For me Ball, Square, Bomb, whatever he create it does not say "I'm wind, I'm Fire, I'm Earth"

you got it wrong rasengan is an incomplete jutsu kakashi said the fourth intention was to create a jutsu with both chakra manipulation and nature manipulation but he wasnt able to complete it and it stayed as the rasengan we know with just the extreme chakra manipulation. otherwise there would be no reason for kakashi to tell that rasengan is an incomplete jutsu and therefore adding an element chakra would be improving the jutsu not COMPLETING it.
So he did actually woke up and came, lets create a spiraling ball for the sake of mixing it with my chakra.
As for him being wind chakra its the most logical since him and naruto share a lot of similarities and that has been stated by jiraiya, kakashi, gamabunta all of whom knew the fourth pretty well

It IS completing the justsu. Kakashi said it himself. Also, I do recall Kakashi saying that Yondamie was a wind user.

Thats what Im saying.
kakashi didnt say the fourth was a wind user(at least not in the translation I read) but I think its the most obvious thing to asume.

Fuck, I also checked back, but I misread it. But yah, he did say it was completing the jutsu though.
