Default Why did the assassinations of Gaara always fail?

Gaara has such an obvious weakness, but still he was unbeatable before Naruto. Kazekage had sent jounin ninjas to assassinate him for years but they always failed. It would have just been so simple. Gaara's weakness was his senses. He can easily be beaten with genjutsu. Then, why didn't he get assassinated? Perhaps the sand ninjas just suck big time.

You seem to misunderstand the term automatic defense.

See, it's automatic, even if genjutsu is used the sand will act on its own, and if the genjutsu renders him unconscious, the Shukaku will kill everything.

maybe because his sand covered his eyes?

or everyone in sand sux at genjutsu?

and even if he gets knocked out, the sand would still protect

Yes, but if lee, a genin could almost kill Gaara, why couldn't the sand find some taijutsu specialist jounin that could kill Gaara, when Gaara was 6 years younger? Was the sand really that weak?

For the genjutsu, sand would still protect, and if Gaara has no control over it, might start attacking for him. Plus, if Gaara is knocked out by the gen, ichibi comes out to pwn the entire village.

Lee wasn't even close to killing Gaara, he didn't even draw blood out of him. Not to mention Gaara still had many form upgrade available to him when Lee went all out on him.

When Gaara was on the ground all beat up, another super fast shinobi attacks his head with a kunai, while Gaara is attacking Lee with the sand, Gaara would have died.

    thats a pretty good assumption

the sand is pure desert making training for speed taijutsu alot harder

its hard to run across soft sand, while in the blistering heat

you would need to wear alot of protection against the heat, not to mention youd dehydrate fast

Probably because no one has such a crazy dedication to train in Sand Country in the desert like Lee and Gai did. If you did do that you would probably end up dead before your training even ends.

killing garra would be anti climactic plus the sand obviously sucks if there kazekage is weaker than naruto.

I seem to recall him being pretty damn close...infact..if it wasnt for his gourd (sp?) forming into sand at the last moment he would of likly been flatended when he impacted the ground.
