If that was true, then when Gaara wanted to be all emo and cut himself, he could've just left that gourd somewhere else. And, you may notice, the pics of him as a kid, when they're TRYING TO ASSASSINATE HIM, have him WITHOUT the gourd.

The automatic defense isn't some curse spell thing. It's shuukaku making sure nothing happens to his host.

The gourd is just a special mixture of sand, it followed him around all the time, you can see it swirling around him, he only disguises it as a gourd to fool his opponents.

It's not really a special mixture. The sand just has a lot of blood in it from those he's killed.

    ...

like I said gaara made the sand take the form of a gourd, but the gourd itself is the sand. The sand, took the form of a gourd..
Before it was just flying around him. It's Not some random sand, but always the same. And yes, with the smeel of blood of the many people it killed.

Just read the manga or watch the anime. We already saw the gourd consist of pure sand. Additionally, Gaara explained it consumes chakra when using extern sand. For the last part: thats correct. Anyway, in this whole discussion we shouldn´t forget that Gaara himself explained alot. But his perception of things doesn´t seem to be correct. It seems the called "cursed sand" is some part of his own, with the Shuukaku spirit in it. And it has nothing do to with the grudge of his mother.
