i think ppl wouldnt bear to kill him.

No matter how close Gaara came to losing to Lee, he's a thousand times more powerful when at home in the sand country. Think of it; if that gourl of sand on his back protects him as well as it does, how much stronger would that automatic defense be with an entire DESERT's worth of sand to use from?

For the genjutsu, sand would still protect, and if Gaara has no control over it, might start attacking for him. Plus, if Gaara is knocked out by the gen, ichibi comes out to pwn the entire village.

Kabuto was a Genin during the chuunin exam, right? Well, he is jounin level. Lee and Gaara fought way above chuunin level at that time. There aren´t many who are on Gais/Lees taijutsu level.

That's not possible, Gaara uses armor of sand as well, so a pitiful kunai won't do the trick, you need a strong piercing attack like chidori or kimimaro's tessenka no mai.

Nope. Granted, the sand in his gourd is of a special blend... the automatic defense can use any sand in the area. You don't think Gaara carries that gourd around when he's at home, do you? As a kid?

The gourd is the form the sand took. The gourd IS sand.
All what I said is written in the chapters. The automatic defense is the cursed sand that was with him at his birth, the sand that was used in the ritual.
