    Exclamation emo

this is a thread for all who like the genre and for any people whom would like to learn what the ubiquitous term means. if you are aware of the true meaning of the term and just don't like it, please state why.

what are your favorite emo and screamo bands? post-emo indie? please recommend some more bands in this genre for me and those who are curious.

emo: rites of spring and antioch arrow
screamo: saetia and circle takes the square
post-emo indie (well, there certainly are a lot, so these are not necessarily my absolute favorite from the genre but only a few) : samiam, the promise ring, sunny day real estate, texas is the reason, knapsack

    ***nu-emo discussion

nu-emo is a term i use to describe bands like armor for sleep, taking back sunday, brand new, and some other bands of this ilk.

    fave bands?

a few of mine are armor for sleep and brand new (amongst legions of others)

what is emo music? i've heard the term so often but never knew what it meant...if it's something like "screamo", would The Bled be considered emo music? i mean, i'm a huge metal fan and a friend told me to try out the Beld, since he told me he was starting to get into metal, but after hearing them i wouldn't consider them metal. so can u (ashxcore) explain to me what emo music is like?

well, the bled is a blend of post-hardcore and metalcore. i think they're alright, but probably not worth checking out compared to other bands. screamo is emo in essence, but only more aggressive with more screaming, faster guitar work, and breakdowns (well, not a traditional breakdown cuz it's slow and more melodic, but it's not quite a beatdown either).

true emo sounds like hardcore, but it is slower and a little less aggressive and generally introspective lyrics. it uses loud/soft dynamics; an emo song can go from almost whispered vocals to screams during various parts of the song. if you want to know a better definition check wikipedia's emo definition and go to fourfa. to hear some actual mp3's, go here.

circle takes the square - in the nervous light of sunday; interview at the ruins
saetia - ariadne's thread; venus and bacchus; nos langues nous trompent; corporeal

I second going to fourfa.com. Very informative. Also, Saetia and Circle Takes the Square = double super win. CTTS is one of the most beautiful bands I've ever listened to. But don't forget Hot Cross, who I will mention cuz they have members of Saetia. And other good screamo like amanda woodward (or any other bands on Level-Plane records)

Also, I've never seen Armor for Sleep labeled as anything like emo. I see "dream-rock" a lot, and they mentioned that in an interview I saw. And you've got your toned down emo stuff like Cap'n Jazz, who are very good (check out their cover of Take On Me by Ah-Ha, totally awesome).

Also, ash, you didn't even mention the greatest Saetia and CTTS songs: The Burden Of Reflecting and Some Natures Catch No Plagues (Saetia) and Non-Objective Portrait Of Karma (CTTS).

Also, count me as one of the people who get incredibly annoyed at misinformed idiots who go around saying "omg all em0 is suckz" when they have no idea what they're talking about.

    i think i love you, rubberluffy (!!!)

armor for sleep made that genre up, lol. i've seen them called emo before, though. someone even called them 'dreamo' [...]

i'd call cap'n jazz post-emo indie. i haven't heard this cover though. i have their anthology, though.

i thought of mentioning non-objective, actually. i guess those are your favorite songs by them, eh?
