I'm halfway through writing this and I figure as a warning I should say this will likely be very rambling, I applogise XD

I don't think you can definae someone simply based on the music they listen to, it may say something about a person based on their preferences and the environment in which they grew up. For instance where I live a LOT of people listen to country, I don't and have never had strong interest in the genre but I was also raised in a household where the main music genre listened to was rock or pop. Basically I grew up listening to Queen and The Beatles.

Age has a lot to do with it as well, I am still a teenager so the music I listen to is largely defined by what I heard growing up. My mom listened to a lot of different types of music, but what she listened to as a teenager was what I heard as a child. While I have defined and refined certain aspects of what I like to listen to, most of it really boils down to me listening to Pink Floyd in my casette player in first grade!

I think more than music defining a person, people define the music. I have friends who listen to all sorts of music, most of my good friends tend towards emo/pop-punk/hard rock/ska so basically sub-divisions of the major rock spectrum, but though they fall in the the atypical mold of todays rebellious angsty teen I know many people who enjoy this music who'd never be suspect, those people also tend to have the broadest range of interest but tend to be naive when it comes to terms and classifications.

So I don't think a person is defined by the music they enjoy, we listen to music because it is familiar and we can relate to it. You can learn about a person from their tastes, but it would be pretty rude to say that depending on the percentage of each type of music someone listens to you can peg him or her down as a certain type of person. It's not the way things work.

I don't listen to music because I relate to it.

Yes I can picture it now. I'm going to get a Michael Jackson job, turning myself white, then go around burn some Christian churches and worship the old Pagan gods like Odin and Fenrir.

I listen to music because I like the sound. The melodies/harmonies.

But I do label people because humans are prejudice in nature. I don't think you can define people by what they listen to, simply because people have different tastes, but you CAN start defining them when they start dressing, talking and doing crap that you typically stereotype into a genre.

Music is like girlfriends to me; I'm constantly surprised by other people's choices.

Lots of metal and rock, also hip-hop and some jpop is all i'd ever need.
If you deny this, then it's your fault.
