Um... Led Zeppelin, Beatles, The Doors for starters.
Probably Pantera; would've been joint with Rage but luckily that's been rectified. Now I'm not necessarily saying that I consider these to be the best, but I think they're definitely who I'd enjoy seeing live the most.
Are we counting bands where they disbanded 'cuz their members died or just 'cuz they fell out?
Anyhow...
The Beatles
blink-182
Treble Charger
Nirvana
The Bee Gees
Blacktop Manhattan
Custom
Jefferson Airplane
The Ramones
System of a Down (indefinite hiatus)
Wham!
I'm sure I'm missing a couple, but these are the only ones I could find.
apart from the obvious(nirvana, led zep, beatles, etc) I would say TransAtlantic and the original GNR.
X Japan from Japan!
The Delgados....though they were never big here in the States I stumbled upon them(from an anime opening no less) and fell in love with their music. When I went to do some more research on them after finding out that there wasn't a song they did that I didn't like I was sad to find they were already broken up after 5 or 6(don't remember right now) amazing albums.
Audio Slave is another band I miss. I don't think there is better vocalist then Chris Cornell in modern rock...Dave Grohl comes close, but luckily Foo Fighters are still around so I don't have to worry about that yet.
There are 2 bands I wish were still together; the first being Stone Temple Pilots and the other being Do As Infinity. STP is reuniting to go on tour though.
Blink-182.
Heh... funny. I'm kinda glad that many of the mentioned groups aren't alive anymore.
Do one-man 'bands' count? He is like... dead. =( Bathory.
