old school hip-hop is dead, but along comes the new era with sick new beats and some people bringing back old traditions. Ne-Yo is bringing back the michael jackson and stevie wonder beats, who says that some new artist can't do that with old school artists like tupac? No, they can't, because old school hip-hop was all about the lyrics. Nowadays, all people listen to is the beat and how catchy the song is. Thats why shit songs can be considered good if they have a good beat and a catchy phrase, despite the utterly crap lyrics.
And how come people here haven't mentioned kanye? He's bringing back TRUE hip-hop.
No, old school hip-hop defined was breakbeats. Things like rocksteady crew, a tribe called quest, earth wind and fire, that was the original hip-hop. That morphed into tupac's new age "rap" hip-hop, which really set the definition of hip-hop into stone, but you can't forget its roots. Hip-hop has been around forever, just continuously changing, therefore, its not dead. Its just been morphed into something that isn't the same as before. As a breaker, i respect and listen to old school hip-hop, but people who don't break don't listen to the oldies. They don't realize that old school hip-hop is just as good as the new age sick beats, therefore, the new age popular music becomes the new hip-hop. Just some artists stay true to the original roots, but you realize, all of those artists have been around for a while.
luda, snoop dog, Nas, Outkast, how long do you think they've been around? they were the ones who made the change from the old-school to the new age hip-hop. The era of breaking is over, and its all onto "krunking" now. Its all perspective.
