Awww what you didn't like the song? xD Thanks though, I might need one more if I can remember what it is.

I'd like to die with the songs I love stuck in my head. I hope to make the most of these hollow bones we become.

Forgive me if it is too long, sometimes i just get a bit too far <_<

Well, you see. Symphonic metal = symphonic qualities. As if it was an orchestra sound. Many instruments. Apart from the band's lead(s) there's more than one voice (normally a small;sometimes big; chorus). Ex: Rhapsody (power), Therion (doom-death), Blind Guardian (power).

Goth metal = Female lead with an angel voice (sometimes together with a growling male lead, but let's ignore that this time). Guitars rarely do any heavy work. Keyboards do a lot here, generally for atmosphere. From time to time you may hear violin or cello (amongst others) wich may mislead you into taking it as symphonic. Ex: As said, Within Temptation, Tristania (female and male leads), Epica...

I am of course, generalizing, since there's goth metal bands that broke the normal concept.
Ex: Galadriel .- female and male lead here too, but heavy guitar riffs amongst other things give them originality
Virgin Black.- male lead, no female as far as i remember.
Lux Occulta .- Some weird hybrid between folk, black and goth.
Enid.- Again, weird. Some doom-goth-folk thing.

I never got interested in Nightwish so i can't tell you much, just that as far as i know they are considered a combination of power, symphonic and goth metal.

evanescence... ughh, well i don't like them, they are goth indeed, but with nu metal influences from what i can recall of their sound.

Those concepts are from what i have heard myself (100+ bands at least), and read about.
    Greetings earthlings.

This thread lacks enough rock and metal goodness, so I'm going to add some of my own.

Here are some songs from my favourite band by far, Opeth. They're a prog-metal band who have made some of the most sad and most beautiful songs I've ever heard. They changed my entire perspective on music.

I've purposely picked songs that have clean vocals and mellow/soft music (except one song) so you people who don't normally like heavy metal or its many sub-genres may still find something you like here. They do have a lot of awesome heavier stuff, ask me for some if you're interested.

    Opeth - Reverie/Harlequin Forest (11:38, 17MB): http://rapidshare.com/files/91365182...orest.mp3.html
    Opeth - Harvest (6:01, 5.5MB): http://rapidshare.com/files/91366708...rvest.mp3.html
    Opeth - A Fair Judgement (10:22, 14MB): http://rapidshare.com/files/91368732...ement.mp3.html
    Opeth - To Rid The Disease (6:20, 8.7MB): http://rapidshare.com/files/91370667...sease.mp3.html

Beware, their songs often change constantly from beginning to end, so don't just stop listening if you don't like the beginning of a song. You might miss out on something awesome if you do.
