hm... well i know visual is really suppose to catch your eye. i know they wear make-up and the anti-gravity hair too. Also there's the androgynous look but there are like different factions to it too like oshare-kei, Eroguro etc. etc.

Ero guro is erotically grotesque >w< think Cali gari, Mucc and Merry

Oshare kei is very stylish and fashionable look. it's like pop punk with rhythmic guitar =) examples: Alice Nine, Panic channel, clavier etc.

Angura Kei is more about the industrial revolution look so they prolly still wore jimbeis and kimonos hm... think early Kagrra.
