out of the bands that you listed above, i heard of meshuggah, lamb of god(gonna see them live soon along with slayer and mastadon and one more band that i can't remember right now), nightwish and as i lay dying. i'll give some of the other bands that you listed a try in the near future. any bands you'd recommend out of that list?

oh, and dream theatre is considered to be progressive metal. the vocals, in my opinion are terrible, they're clean vocals and sound really annoying. it seems like he's trying to sing like dickenson from maiden but fails misserably.

i recommend the berzerker (they're like death metal mixed with speedcore, grindcore, and industrial), HORSE the band (nintendo [8-bit] meets hardcore/metalcore), candiria (metal + jazz...hmmm), all shall perish (pretty good death metal band), old underoath (well, be forewarned they're christian if that puts you off, but they were a black/death/metalcore band not to be missed), extol, (same as with underoath, but they are melo-death with some black metal influence) mastodon, cave in (they have a good alternative album as well), zao (same here as with extol, but they are metalcore), becoming the archetype (same as with zao, but they are melo-death), converge, and between the buried and me

now while i am not too familiar with these, somehow i think you'd like them: at the gates, soilwork, napalm death, sonata arctica, and borknagar.

well gee, that's a good portion of the list

oh yeah and i have a pretty good idea of what dream theater sounds like, i heard sometime some long time ago, but everyone's description is fairly similar about the progressive-ness and whatnot. i hear the drums are kickass, although i am not familiar with mike portnoy.

thanks for the bands, i'll try and get some after i finish my exams. and about soilwork, sonata artica and the rest i already have some albums from them except for borknager, never heard of them but i'll add it to my list.

you are correct, the drumming in dream theatre is good, but i just can't get past the vocals of the band. they have a few intrumental songs that are pretty good that i heard a long time ago.

you sound like me, in adding stuff to your list. that is my signature saying. i have a composition notebook and a spiral one chock full of band names, recommendations, and albums (although now some pages are reserved with the same for manga and books, minus albums of course :P).

speaking of which, have you any recommendations for me?

hmmm, i think i'd face the same "predicament" about the vocals as well.

i would recommend Death (especially their album, The Sound of Perserverance), Carcass is pretty good, At The Gates (the album Slaughter of the Soul is really good), Arch Enemy (the album Anthems of Rebellion), i'm not sure if you like power metal or not but if you do check out Edguy, Hypocrisy is pretty good too, Dark Tranquility, Kataklysm (the last few bands after Edguy are mostly death metal), Kreator (sort of remind of slayer), Opeth (one of my favourites, they have long songs and crazy riffs and solos, i think they're music is pretty complex).

well, i don't know how much of those you've heard but there's still a few missing there but they're black metal bands and i recall you saying you disliked black metal so i left it out.

hmmm, i have slaughter of the soul already. :P and for arch enemy although i have stigmata already, i can check that out as well. i have mind's i by dark tranquility too. oh...opeth... *has blackwater park* i haven't listened to much of either, the most i've heard would be about 4 or so songs from at the gates and about three from arch enemy.

no, i didn't say i didn't like black metal. i'm open to most subgenres of metal given that they don't have blasphemous lyrics. :/ certainly i don't want to listen to anything like deicide. oh ja and nothing uber-gorey like cannibal corpse either -_- (this doesn't really deter me from some grindcore bands if it is just album and song titles). could you go through your recommendation and weed out those types of bands? thanks

as for power metal, i don't know anything about it. and for some odd reason i think of 80's style, superfluous solo-ing, and annoying high-pitched clean vocals.

yeah, power metal has high pitch -iron maiden-like vocals so i guess not. Although with the black metal, all the recommendations i had in mind have blasphemous lyrics involved. here's the bands in case you haven't heard of them, Emperor, Mayhem, Dimmu Borgir, Dark Funeral, Kovenant and Morbid Angel(not black metal but their lyrics can be a little over the egde sometimes).

in terms of blasphemous lyrics, what do you consider blasphemous? do you mean satanism and things of that nature?

a few more bands that came to me that you might like are Quo Vadis and Sceptic.

the bands that i think might contain blasphemous lyrics would have to be with Kreator and Kataklysm if anything. the others should be okay.

i meant anti-christian and satanic lyrics. and plus i mentioned deicide as the epitome of such... i don't wanna listen to any band along those lines
