yeah, isn't alternative the short form of alternative rock?

It's best just to vote for the one that is closest. When we did this once before the whole thread got tangled in a web of genres and what was what and it just ruined the whole thread. As for myself I voted rock with my second favorite being classical.

at least through something like this people can become educated
i don't think there is much ignorance to worry about in this forum on a site such as this one

well:
Grunge: Audioslave, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden
Punk: Sum 41, The Offspring, Blink 182 (their old songs)
Melodic rock: Led Zepellin, Pink Floyd...etc

well and Japanese music:
Hip Hop: Rip Slyme
Punk: Asian Kung Fu Generation, Cool Joke
Rock: L'Arc~en~Ciel
Techno: Dj Mystic =P (pretty good)

also there really is no point in nit picking about genres. every broad catagory has about 50 subgenres. just looking at metal there are: death, black, power, doom, thrash, speed, progressive, folk, viking etc. and thats not even going into grindcore. so the list is good as is, to cover everything it would have to have so many choices that it would end up showing nothing.
although puck and xcore might deserve their own catagory.
