Yeah, but isn't the ambiguity in Veidt's character one of the main points of the comic? After all, Watchmen is a deconstruction of the superhero genre, and Ozymandias' character was meant to show that a hero must sometimes employ villanous means, or perhaps that a villain can sometimes be heroic. Changing that to the outright socipathy shown by movie Ozymandias ruins the point completely.
So basically I'd be inclined to say "screw the mainstream audience", but perhaps that's just my inner fanboy speaking.
And the lack of gigasquid was also a bit disappointing, even though it had been clear for a long time that it wouldn't be included. IIRC, gigasquid was meant to be another swipe at the ridiculous plots of comicbook villains, thus adding to the deconstructive theme of the comic. But you can't have everything I guess.
