Default 21

Watch it and I kill you.

I hate this movie. It's so racist!!!!!!!

So typical of Hollywood to take a real life story about a book about ASIANS and replace the main characters with WHITE people. WTF?!

    The beginning...
Count her out - The Boston Globe
"Willis, 38, who grew up in Mount Vernon, Ill., had never played blackjack when she joined the team in the early 1990s. Then a student at Harvard Law School, Willis and her boyfriend were both "math geeks." They were also friends with Jeff Ma, an MIT student who was one of the ringleaders of the school's clandestine blackjack club. "Jeff would occasionally have an expensive bottle of wine or champagne, and it didn't make a whole lot of sense. Then he told us about Vegas," Willis says. "I think it dawned on him that we could play blackjack and also give the team, which was mostly Asian and male, a little diversity."

What was planned for the movie...
MIT Alumnus and 'Busting Vegas' Author Describe Experience of Beating the House - The Tech
"During the talk, Mezrich mentioned the stereotypical Hollywood casting process — though most of the actual blackjack team was composed of Asian males, a studio executive involved in the casting process said that most of the film’s actors would be white, with perhaps an Asian female."

    What actually happened...
    reappropriate » Blog Archive » Trans-Racialization in “21″
"Perhaps in response to criticisms that 21 was “White-washing” the story, the filmmaker also cast Asian American actors Lisa Lapira and Aaron Yoo in the movie, but they remain secondary characters, distantly-removed from the story of the White male and female protagonists."

How the Asian American characters were portrayed...
When the stakes are high, ‘21’ folds - Brockton, MA - The Enterprise
"The previous year, the scholarship Ben seeks went to a one-legged Korean student. He’s not the only Asian character “21” cuts off at the knees. The real-life students mostly were Asian-Americans, but “21” whitewashes its cast and disappointingly lumps its only major Asian actors (Aaron Yoo and Liza Lapira) into one-note designations as the team’s kleptomaniac and a slot-playing “loser.”

It's a bloody movie, for chrissakes. Hollywood's trying to make money, not cater to the Asian blackjack-playing community or political correctness. I find it annoying when Asians whine about them not being represented in movies. It's entertainment. Audiences like seeing starts like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Deal with it.

That said, the movie itself was crap. The plot was stale and the underlying moral message was almost shoved down the audience's throat. Don't watch it.

    You're horrible.

    I hate you.

It just really annoys me that the Asian male can never get a decent role. They get three options. Really really nerdy males, really really kick-ass kung-fu stars, or really really foreign people. Name anyone in this generation who is a male Asian star that doesn't fit one of those three criteria. That's horrible...

It's people like you who continue this disgusting stereotype.

    Thanks man for sharing.

Although I guess its not quite as bad, I can kinda see this as racist. I dunno if it was intentional but they have to cater to their audience. America is 74% white. I dunno how many of them would go see an "asian" movie that didn't involve kung-fu.

I'd like to die with the songs I love stuck in my head. I hope to make the most of these hollow bones we become.
I raise a toast to the the souls that sang all along. I've been gathering friends to just to make some sounds,
before the ship goes down, I've been making amends by making the rounds before the whole world ends

Well, if you want to go there, how many movies are there, where latino's are cast as gangmembers...

    It's all about making money.

I saw it. It entertained me. I didn't pay. It was a good night.
I would have rather it had been an asian main character though... That klepto was hilarious.

CPR. Be0 is asian. And I am Asian too.

But why do I have to mention this?

In the trailer the main guy is beaten to a pulp for counting cards. Does this happen in real life? No, but it makes for good entertainment.

If you are going to complain about accuracy. Then go watch a documentary.

Was the doorman to the casino really that race? I don't know. But nobody cares because if it doesn't detract from the movie it doesn't matter.

And I am sincerely sorry some twisted sense of racial pride gets in the way of you being entertained.

That being said I saw it and it was decent. The part with the one guy talking about retards making money made me laugh.

Watch Cold Mountain, then whine to me about bigotry.

Bastards. If anything the truth is the historical OPPOSITE of that movie.

I'm going to be the Asian Leading Man of the future.

    ...I can dream, can't I?

If they make a film about a closet p0n0s fetishist who chases after Korean girls, then you've got it made.

    @sns: <3

Anyway, here's an analogy. Most love songs that are written nowadays are all about love between a man and a woman. I don't see gays/lesbians/transsexuals/animal fetishists going out on the streets (or starting Facebook groups) complaining about unfair representation. Instead, they start making music themselves.

Hollywood's in this game to make money. American audiences are predominantly white, and also desire to see white actors on the screen. Therefore, Hollywood casts young, appealing, white actors in movie roles. End of story. I sincerely don't see why it's so difficult to understand this...
