I think a big budget live action Akira would be awesome, but the likelihood of Hollywood doing a good job or putting a proper team together is about as good as me getting a date with Scarlett Johansson. I can see it turning into another Transformers.
Transformers wasn't bad at all, so I don't see the significance of bringing it up...
Whats this about it being in NYC instead of Tokyo?! I'd rather have Michael Bay do Akira than some noob who shot some nice commercials though. I wonder who they'll get to cast it.
