Satellites huh... interesting. All this time it was less than a mile offshore of Coney Island.

Would that not have gone against the effect they were trying to create? They aimed for realism, and In my personal opinion, keeping the monster as an undefined force would have inforced the feling they were creating.

But, I can see why viewers would want more depth, answers are what the audience wants to have, so they can be satisfied when leaving a cinema/theatre.

Keeping in mind, I have not seen this movie yet. I'm simply going on what I have seen and read.

lol @ people thinking the monster is the main focus of this movie.

it's obvious from the trailer that it isn't, anyone who thinks otherwise is missing the whole point.

Tell me about it. Thank god the script was good because the whole point is the character interaction. I would have done the exact same thing the characters did in that situation (although I wouldn't have tried the Brooklyn Bridge first I would have went to the Broadway-Nassau-Fulton Street subway station and tried to walk to the High Street-Brooklyn Bridge subway station... I wonder if the military was stopping them from using the subway tunnels in the beginning)

LOVED it!!! Saw it on opening night. I had to look down sometimes because of nausea (man, I'm really glad it didn't come out on imax - I would have vomited everywhere)... perfect ending, lots of realism, overall awesome.

Yes, this movie was fine the way it was and successful in what type of atmosphere it was trying to create. I was suprised at how complex the characters were. I heard they were making a second one. I also heard that the muffled voice at the end says Its alive backwards.

Yeah rumors are its not a true sequel but instead the account of different people in a similar situation (escaping manhattan with a video camera) at the exact same time. If its true the alternative perspective should be interesting.

Tido Wave, a terrorist organization (yes, eco-terrorists are still terrorists) fuck up a satellite owned by a company named Tagruato. This satellite falls from orbit and lands in the ocean - this can be seen in the last scene of "Cloverfield" when Rob and Beth are at the carnival.

Tagruato begins to search for the satellite deep down in the ocean and uncovers an unknown substance that they later use as the main ingredient for soft-drinks produced by their new branch dubbed "SLUSH-O."

During said search, they unknowingly disturb the "Cloverfield" monster, an amphibious monstrosity which has yet to reach maturity. The Cloverfield monster moves from it's resting place towards Manhattan, taking out an off-shire drilling facility along the way. (It's theorized the reason the Cloverfield monster headed towards Manhattan was due to all the vibrations and electrical impulses/waves coming from the busy island.)

The Cloverfield monster surfaces and begins to reign his havoc on Manhattan. This is where the movie picks up.

    Now for the connections:

The company Rob is traveling to Japan for is Tagruato's SLUSH-O.

It is theorized that the ingredient found by Tagruato in the deep sea search for the satellite causes victims bitten by the Cloverfield monster's parasites to explode when the saliva and/or toxins from said bite mixes with the traces of the ingredient in SLUSH-O brand products. Freeze-framing the scene where Marlena explodes, one can see that she actually expands and explodes in her abdominal region, though she was actually bitten in the shoulder. Note, however, that it is also theorized that the explosive effect may be simply directly related to the bites, as a soldier with an explosive wound in his abdominal region is seen being carted away, and that these bites are very well known to cause explosions to the military nursing staff.
wut? Fanboy speculation or real plot process?
