but the thing is, daylight vanished before the dogs could get to him. shouldn't the infected be able to get him ? some people earlier on theorized that it wasn't dark "enough", and i suppose that would make the most sense. still... it felt kinda weak and anti-climactic when he was suddenly back in his lab

Spoiler: About how the bloody scene in the bedroom, with the kid and mum miraculously alive elsewhere, I'm not confused by it at all. They're living in a world full of blood thirsty monsters (debatable according to their varying degrees of intelligence), bluntly put. And they're still alive. It's kill or be killed, and I reckon they've killed some monsters to survive for 4 years.

Moreover, during the scene when Robert (Will) pointed the gun at them in the kitchen, the boy had instinctively armed himself with a knife before being told to put it down after the situation defused. I'm going to hazard a guess and say he's gotten into violent confrontations with the dark seekers too. Hence, the scene with the blood was most likely a slain dark seeker by the mother and/or son.

It's shown that the blood was caused by one of the "infected" pulling himself through the armored window.

edit 2, nevermind... although I am still losing it--

anyway, I thought the liquid he poured on the steps was vinegar, and electricity won't last without upkeep. so I'm not sure how he had power, but water and sanitation can last up to 10 years without any (or very very little) upkeep. it basically is just a reservoir that goes through some pipes into your home.

I don't remember any "mysterious liquid". I do remember there were two different things you might be thinking of:

    1. He used a vial of his own blood to attract the infected when he captured one of them in his trap.
    2. I thought he poured gasoline or some other flammable liquid on the steps leading up to his house as a trap if the infected tried to get in.
I thought the sun had already set. I guess I can be somewhat satisfied that the sun was setting and the skyscrapers effectively blocked out most of the sun, allowing the dogs to chase Neville. Referring to #2, if what Neville does pour on his front steps was gasoline, why does he pour it on his jacket?

^ Really? I was not aware of this ...

I'm almost certain he pours vinegar over the steps and himself.

So is it to throw off his scent then?

He pours it on his jacket? I can't remember that, it's been a while since I watched the movie. You're probably right about it being vinegar or something similar.

I saw the alternate ending to the movie. It's really good, it had a better cut than the other, whereas it ended too quick.

Yeah. Although both could be longer This one sticks more to the "last man on earth" better than the other.
