    Default Iris Zero manga

Is anyone following this series? It just got started, but it's actually not bad. Magical high school romantic comedy, quite similar to Mx0 (or to a lesser extent, The World God Only Knows). Weekly scanlations, up to chapter 8 released as of now.

In this case, nearly every child in the world is born with a special iris that allows them to see something, such as a person's suitability for a position, etc. Only a very small proportion of children are born without a special iris, and these are known as Iris Zeroes. Our main protagonist is one such person, and because he gets ostracised and looked down upon for being different, he's adopted a policy of "minimal exposure" - don't stand out in any way. Unfortunately, he keeps getting dragged into situations which make him stand out, and so to escape he has to find a way to solve other people's problems so that they would leave him alone.

Artwork is good, girls are cute, premise is interesting, being a blend of different genres. (And the authors explicitly state they're going to keep the fanservice low! For a high school rom com, that's amazing. ) And it's also much more subtle and in-depth in the characterization and exploring the effects of irises than the usual shounen series. Highly recommended for those who felt Mx0 ended too early.

P.S. By the way, anyone want to guess what Kuga's iris is? I'm betting it has something to do with seeing relationships between people. Maybe love interests?

I've been following it, and enjoying it far more than I expected to. It's sort of a blend of Spiral and Mx0, without the fanservice the latter suggests, and with much of the intelligence of the former (and unfortunately the same sort of stupids, but that seems to come with the genre, at least in Japan).

It would be nice to have a girl join the cast who isn't either moe or tsumdere, though.

BTW, I take issue with your statement:
And the authors explicitly state they're going to keep the fanservice low! For a high school rom com, that's amazing.
You mean for a shounen high school rom com.

Heh, fine... shounen high school rom com. (Though I would argue that shoujo high school stories have their own share of fanservice nowadays, though it's behaviour rather than than bodies.)

They do, though it depends on the age. Younger shoujo romcoms, such as those that run in say Ribon don't have nearly the same amount of that behavioral fanservice as, for ex, Cheese!. With Margaret and LaLa being somewhere between those, depending on the series.

Ooh... chapter 9 features a very good use of Koyuki's iris, and reveals Kuga's one as well. Not bad. Somewhat close to what I guessed. Now I wonder what that glasses guy wants with her? And can she see it?

You know, the foreshadowing in this series is pretty good. If you trace back to earlier chapters (like the Field Trip one), you can already see clues to the characters' relationships. It feels like the mangaka started out with an entire arc plotted.

Yeah, the story has been well-constructed so far, both on the episode level and overall. Worth continuing with, even with the official couple already indicated but hard.

More like, what is the glasses guy's iris? Seems like he has been wanting to speak/hook up with Kuga since the Field Trip Arc.

Well, we know his name is Tokita (ch. 4 p.5), and I'm pretty sure he's the same guy as the one who was chairing the student rep meeting in ch. 1 p.31, asking Koyuki to indicate the qualified person for council head. So I'm guessing he's the student rep of Toru and Kuga's class. Maybe he's the ambitious sort who was aiming to become student council head, and resented Toru barging in on the meeting in ch. 1 to show that Koyuki was the qualified person. Having noticed Kuga joined Toru's group, he may think they've become good friends, so he might be trying to use her to get at Toru.

No idea what his iris is, though...
