Reading through the sports
So just I archive binged on Saki (which isn't bad, though the increasingly frivolous fanservice is kinda annoying). And no, I know squat about mah jong, and frankly don't care to. But I realized this wasn't a problem because, well, the details of the play are more or less irrelevant to what I was reading for -- namely, what the plays meant to the characters, and how they interacted, and how their relationships developed. The sports aspect as, in other words, an expression of character development.
Which is pretty much how I read most sports series. Heaven knows I sure don't read Adachi for the baseball, which I don't even like as a sport. I can't stand boxing, and I even finished Katsu! Give me a sports series that's entirely about the sport, with the characters that exist as positions the field, and I toss it aside. Powerups be damned -- I wanna see the work, and the teamwork, and the team.
Anyone else do this?
