    Default Itsumo Misora

I'm sure Dizzy has noticed, but I just wanted to point out that another scanlation group has picked up Adachi's Itsumo Misora and is putting out chapters regularly. And the story, it is getting interesting.

I gotta say, though, am alternately amused and irritated at his continually frustrating our expectations of the story. For a story supposedly about the first Japanese to win the Oscar for best actress, he's teased us with, what, three different ways of her not being "discovered" with a fourth being set up with the latest chapter. Playful, yes, but still irritating. I almost wish he'd give that thread up, and stick to the kids with psychic powers plot, even though there's no real tension there -- or, really, a story, at least given the plot elements that have shown up.

(If you do read it, you may want to ignore how the heroine is introduced with a full-crotch fanservice pantyshot when she's 12, if that sort of thing bugs you. At least she turns 13 a few days later, before her nude scene.)

Yup yup... frankly, I still have no idea where Adachi is going with this, except perhaps a slice-of-life focusing on the theme of "youth" by showing Misora's life and best friends in school before she becomes a famous actress. But the whole psychic powers thing is weird.

Then again, this was in the same time frame as Niji-Iro Togarashi, so my suspicion is that during this period of his career Adachi was just playing around with different settings and reference frames, to see what he could accomplish outside baseball.

Actually, it's a decade later than Niji-Iro Togarashi, between H2 and Katsu!. Huh.

I reread NIT, and you're right, there's resemblences. Not the least being the narrator's repeated dubious assertions about the story (that it's set in the future, that it's about the first Japanese best-actress Oscar winner).

Annnnd that's a wrap. Final chapter is available for download here.

    Um.

    Yeah.

I don't mind open-ended series, but I prefer being able to figure out what's actually happening at that ending. This was a story about the first Japanese winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress, in much the same way that Niji-Iro Togarishi was not set in the Tokugawa Shogunate, right?

Sorry, I somehow missed this earlier. Reading it now...

    Uh.

    Wut?

    I have two theories:
    (1) Adachi wanted to write a story about Japan's top actress, but got carried away by his characters and imagination into the mashup we see here.
    (2) The story was meant to go on for much longer, but the series got cancelled, so he had to pull a weird ending off.

Still. Maybe it's meant to be a surrealist tale?

Or maybe I should just go ahead and say that this particular story reminds me of Oh! Great's plots. A little sad, but I suppose everyone has their off-seasons...

Except, it was aiming for that ending for at least the last volume. Or at least, that plot -- maybe he did get cut off early, for all I know. But something in this direction was intended.

    It's just. As you say:
