    Default Mahoraba manga scanlations completed

Finally, after more than 4 years, the scanlations for Mahoraba's series has finally come to an end, and we can see the brilliant ending. Needless to say, it's really REALLY good. I think the ending absolutely captured the essence of what Mahoraba was, and the whole sequence of pictures in the last chapter reminded me very strongly of both Aria/Aqua as well as Yokohama Kaidaishi Kikou in its sheer emotional power. Plus the children! The children... what a way to make a comeback!

For those who haven't read it yet, Mahoraba is an 11-volume gentle romantic comedy about Shiratori Ryuushi, a young man who moves into an old apartment house while studying at an art college. Here he meets several unique and wacky tenants, and most of all, his second cousin Aoba Kozue, a beautiful high school girl who acts as the landlady and manager of the place. Unfortunately, Shiratori soon finds out that Kozue has Multiple Personality Disorder... and he strives to find a way to heal her as they gradually fall in love. Think Maison Ikkoku or Love Hina told with the same gentle pacing as Aria/Aqua or YKK, and much lesser fanservice, and you'll get an idea of what Mahoraba's like. I highly encourage anyone who enjoys romances to read it. This is A-list material.

Anyone else following this series and wanting to talk about the ending?

Ah, there we go. Nice ending, ya.

To be honest, it took a while for me to take to the series. I liked the last four-or-so volumes a lot more than I expected to, based on the first four-or-so. It does romanticize MPD, but at least it plays fair and stick with the rules it establishes. The last chapter was very sweet, and I'm bemused at the children and what they represent -- they're biologically dubious (four identicals? um, yeah) but narratively spot-on; the scanlators' comparison to Yotsuba&! made me fall over laughing in my chair, especially since, yes, those are Yotsuba's four basic facial expressions. I say "sweet," though, because it didn't have much emotional power for me -- not like the final volume of YKK with its punch to the gut every. single. chapter. The silent scene of the personalities in conclave were more moving -- and, despite being drawn out as they were, the chapter of farewells.

Finally got time to read it.

I like the second to the last chapter best, the farewells made by all Kozue's personality is really good. specially with Natsume. The whole whether we really existed or not part. but the last chapter is still really good. It gave the series a conclusion and how things will go from there. The 4 girls weren't really much of a surprise in my part as they have been a part of Kozue from the very beginning but seeing them there still made me happy. Specially with the whole: This is a place of greetings, farewells and ... reunions. Pieced it all together wonderfully ^^

@pseudo: I didn't notice the yotsuba-reference. Where did you read it? I gotta reread those chapters again. >_<

if i recall correctly it was in one of the first chapters (somewhere vol 1).

she was in her child personality^^ and then the hole chapter felt like a yotsuba parody in terms of eye and facial expressions

It was in one of the text files in the final chapter, with the translator's notes. They even parceled out roles for everyone in that two-page spread, who was which Yotsuba&! characater.

I think you're right... the last chapter did feel kind of drawn out - I expected it to end at least twice before it actually ended - once when the writer finished his story, and once when the entire Shiratori family was arrayed out to welcome Megumi back. But it still continued on beyond that, which was just extra bonuses for me. I really liked the scene where Kozue was shown washing the dishes with the two girls next to her in the last chapter... I thought that was a great scene, and it gave the first inclinations of what happened... a good point for an Adachi-like open ending, but I'm glad it went beyond that.

Right... to be honest, I wasn't expecting such deep thoughts from Natsume - I kept on associating her with magician and forgot that she's also a bookworm/deep-thinker. But I really like how she quoted Descartes, and explained the existential problems that they were having. It really felt frightening to me... whether they would still exist or not, and then when Kozue did that magic trick... I could totally feel Shiratori's joy that somewhere inside Kozue, Natsumi still lived.

When I saw the 4 girls, I was really happy... though I do wonder if Shiratori named them after their predecessors. :P I'm also glad that the situations between Shiratori's and Kozue's friends got resolved, and that the artist lady was able to find Sayoko. (And LOL aT tHe pReSIdeNT's JoB...) It was a completely satisfying wrap-up for me. Admittedly, Mahoraba as a whole isn't such a great emotional rollercoaster as some of the other romances out there, but I think it does manage to tell a tightly-knit and well-rounded story.

I'm still trying to figure out which girl is which though... On the two-page spread (pp. 34-35), I'm guessing the girls from left to right are: Chiyuri, Saki, Natsumi and Nanako. Do you concur with that?
