I have no choice... I HAVE to talk about this. The production quality of the first three episodes are amazing... both visuals, animation and sound. I think PG Works have really managed to achieve a production quality equal to KyoAni's works, and yet it's all so much subtler and gentler than - let's say, Haruhi or FMP Fumoffu. Did you notice how sometimes the frame freezes into an art-like painting for a second or two? It's a wonderful technique when you remember that it's named after a ren'ai game and that Shinichiro's an artist.
And the directing and scriptwriting is awesome as well. There's so little things said, and it's such a gentle pace compared to some of the other romantic dramas out there, but it just draws you in. For those who have yet to watch it, please do. This is the sort of series that grows on you more and more. Don't expect a big first impression... but rather a slow, gradual falling-in-love. Which is also sort of what the entire series looks like it's going to be like. You already sort of know each of the characters' feelings (except perhaps Noe), and yet it's that constant tension between what they say and what they feel that keeps you on the edge. After watching episode 3 today I was going "Oh NOOO!!"
The strange thing about True Tears is that because everything is so gentle and subdued, you don't get the highs and lows of emotion you find in... say, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien or even Kanon. Yet the drama is equally deep. It's just that it's muted, subtle... never melodramatic in the way the other two titles can be sometimes. Noe may be as crazy as Haruhi is, but it's not played for laughs. Everything is quiet. Which is why I love this series. I think it can be watched over and over again (provided this level of quality is maintained throughout the rest of the 13 episodes). If I get the chance, I'm definitely going to buy this when it comes out.
Is anyone else watching True Tears this season? Can you help me explain why this series is so beautiful? Oh, and what do you think is the dynamic behind Shinichiro, his mother, and Hiromi? Do you think it's jealousy of her son's affections, or is it something more?
