Manga (Manhwa) Spotlight: Ruler of the Land Written by Jeon Keuk-Jin Illustrated by Yang Jae-Hyun
    Released by ADV Manga

Ruler of the Land is one of the first Korean comics, known as manhwa, releases by ADV Films. It is a pulp martial arts and swordplay epic, focusing on Bi-Kwang Han, a loutish swordsman who stumbles into two conflicts too many and find himself on the path of towards inheriting an aged warlord's dream of uniting his land.

The first encounter was saving The Lord of the Thousand Horses, after which Bi-Kwang Han refused an offer to become the master's disciple. After rejecting the lord's elite Black Winds, he stumbled into granddaughter of one of the legendary Five White Spirits, Hwa-Rin, disguised as a man while searching for her grandfather. Seeing a scroll depicting Hwa-Rin, Bi-Kwang Han decide his will marry the woman. However even after being driven together by waves of assassins, and seeing her chest, Bi-Kwang Han can't figure out who is companion is (he figures she is a hermaphrodite.)

The series features a Jackie Chan tongue-in-cheek approach to martial arts action, with the big budget aesthetic of Crouching Tiger or Hero. It isn't quite the Tick meets Musa - The Warrior, and the jokes are mostly low brow sex gags, but the action is frequently dynamic, well choreographed and comically odd.

The trouble with Ruler of the Land is that the illustrations frequently uses a style of abstracted character design better suited to comic strips. The story is meant to be light, but it comes across as feather weight. Hardly a page goes by without some character mugging or further deformed into a goofier rendering for the pane. Even at its most dramatic movements of mortal combat the story is only half serious, but the frequent use of goofy caricatures and a few rare cartoonish taps against the forth wall work against establishes the characters as the as epic heroes. It also undermines the perceived quality of the illustration in general. The composition isn't substantially less complex than many action series, and its often quiet effective, but the pervasiveness of gag design gives the series an almost amateurish look.

The attention grabber in Ruler of the Land is its length. Ruler of the Land runs 31 volumes, with is plenty of times to evolve. There are many excellent manga series with rough first volumes that are little indication of how engaging the series will be would later become. The fact that the series ran so long (for comparison, DragonBall run 42 volumes which was adapted into 444 anime episode , One Piece has collected 32 volumes so far translated into 193 episodes of anime, Ruruoni Kenshin ran 28 volumes) seems to attest to that the series caught reader's attention.
