Angry My angry old man thread

First off I'd like to ask if anyone can tell me were to find the Project A-ko and Genocyber opening themes in downloadable Mp3 form, but thats not the main reason for opening this thread...

Where to begin...well first off I'd like to say thank you too all the people who lovingly translate Manga for us poor saps who can't read Hiranga, making chapters that wouldn't be seen for months or even years available in the process, thank you from the depths of my heart. Now on to business, last night I was online watching Project A-ko and the opening theme struck a cord deep within my memories,a vague unease in the back of my brain that I couldn't pin down,I laid the matter aside and finished with the show...just kidding,I immediately began obsessing over this unease by searching the web for a Mp3 of the song, while doing this another song floated to the surface of my mental midden heap, the opening theme to Genocyber,so I also began a search for that song. After finding them (in non downloadable format of course >)I listened for a bit while prodding the unease at the back of my mind, and then it hit me like a bomb.

Flashback-The place West Virginia, the time 1995?,the setting a hick town...
I was a still young lad watching a new cable channel called the SCI-FI network which was then featuring its first Annual Sci-Fi Japanimation Festival. A show called Dominion Tank Police started up (to the worst J-pop techno ever)...and the earth moved.I sat and watched Annapuma and Unipuma do a strip tease (set to even worse J-poop techno) for a bunch of cops and then proceed to hose said cops down with more lead than a WW1 battlefield contains. My entire reality shifted, everything I had thought was cool was now so much trash. It went on for a whole week movie after movie(I only learned later that they were called OVA's or was it OAV?damn).I shit you not,as I remembered these things from my young days tears formed in my eyes, these memories were beautiful, they exemplified everything that I loved in Anime
(I'm not kidding when I say that watching these first movies was nearly a religious experience for me.) The festival ended but the memories remained, time passed, new festivals were added year by year,Sci-Fi added Robotech and Gigantor to their morning lineup (they may be up to blatant douchebaggery now,but Sci-Fi was the shit back when Anime was still relatively niche),and the years danced on.Enter Pokemon which broke the gates wide open what had been a trickle was now a flood, this was my greatest dream realised, the mainstreaming of anime.Skip to the present,I,having recently awakend from my mental torpor(thanks to the aforementioned memories being recalled)would like to ask one question...

[If you don't like swearwords, are easily offended,or have never heard of,Dominion Tank Police,Project A-ko,Genocyber,M.D.Geist,Black Magic M-66 or any other of the 80's-early 90's classics;leave now,if you stay dont post unless you actually know what you are talking about.]

...WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED!? How did it go so bad?

I look at most of today's anime (Manga may be excluded as it is still pretty kick ass.) and I see storylines that are 66th generation clones of 80's storylines ,Bishounen lead characters(what ever happened to having fugly leads like Ataru Moroboshi in anime) who are less human than the robots/freaks/monsters that they are killing, plot progression slower than aThorazine sedated syphalitic mongloid, DBZ powerups at every turn, comedy routines so lame ass and banal that they make me want to go out and murder the American Dream out of sheer hatred and spite(and I'm American), cheap ass heros that never,NEVER lose(here's lookin at you Yugi/Jaden you cheating bastards),stories that always have a happy ending no matter how fucked the heros are halfway through the story (in my day ALL of the movies began with a city leveling nuclear explosion that killed millions and got more violent and fatalistic from that point on and ended with most of the cast dead, mangled, insane,or wishing they were just one or all of those three.),and people who wont just stop explaining what they're doing, whats happening, who their friends are,why they're killing this or that person and so on...its like the writers think that the people reading/watching these things are to stupid to figure anything out without a fucking 3min+ explanation for every event, person, and circumstance in a 50 mile radius,STFU and just go kill them already. This concludes my rant.
Now that all that poison is out of my system I just wanted to say that I love many modern anime, and that my litany of offenses is by no means comprehensive.I used to think that the Japanese where just better storywriters and directors than use but now I see that they put out just as much bullshite as we do (just in a prettier, candycoatedmegajiggleboobie package than we do).

If you aren't an old fart like me and you have no meaningful comments about the subject matter please don't post here,it'd just be a waste of space. If you have a meaningful comment(either for or against my point),then please post it.If you ARE an old fart like me who gets teary eyed about 80's anime then please talk with me for nostalgia's sake.I'd love to hear from other people who remember when the world was young(and also hear about any good anime that I missed so that I can watch them )

The 80s were filled with just as much derivative crap as the 00s. Seriously. It's that, back then, only a small stream of the best stuff was getting out of Japan, but now there's a flood, bringing with it the a large portion of that "90% of everything" that is crap.

Project A-Ko rocked. I need to rewatch it again. But yanno -- Simoun beats it with a one-pilot falcon remergion.

Um,I must have earwax lodged in my brain because I cant understand what you are saying here.WTH is a remergion? Is that English?
Anyhow you are right about that.I guess that a better way to put my thought would be to say that I wish it had remained a trickle,I think it would have been for the best. You are correct tho' about there being alot of crap( anyone remember Garaga?).
If you have the time I'd love to hear about any classics that I missed when I was young or modern movies that have that kind of 80's vibe.
Seriously, this forum needs a section for old men to get together and talk about this stuff (it probably wouldn't be popular enough though.)
Also I was mainly just venting some pent up frustration.

Heh. "Remergion" is from Simoun, though until the official dub comes out it's anyone's guess if that's the spelling intended. (Wikipedia seems to have settled on Re Majion.) Remergions are mystical power spells activated by piloting a simoun flier in the right pattern, and they come in many forms. Find the anime -- it's worth it.

I'll see your Garaga and raise you a Gachaman.

Btw fifthtouch, that sig is awsome.Cromartie rocks!

Also,I have to say that Gatchaman isn't nearly as bad as Garaga.According to the physics of our universe its impossible for anything to suck worse than Garaga.

    Why? Because I didn't like the 80s.

Others? Excel Saga, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Princess Tutu. (I assume you've already seen Revolutionary Girl Utena.)

I feel your pain, and let me answer by saying, computers.

Animators have become reliable on what gets the job done quicker. Colouring is now done using computers through the scanned cells. OVA and Movie productions are the only projects where effort is used. And they have become a rarety, mainly because they have a shit ton of work on them, that it takes 2- 5 years to produce.

Series have also become generic, because of the popular demand. Companies like Gonzo, Madhouse, and the other modern producers are now given not only deadlines, but an episode count to work in. Unlike back in the day, you would have a series that is wrapped up nicely within 5, or 7, or 12 episodes. Or simply till they have finished the story. There was a lot of more freedom back then.
