Romeo x Juliet is a retelling of Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers, but set in the medieval fantasy city of Neo Verona, which boasts arching skyscrapers and flying pegasi. Long ago, the Grand Duke Montague murdered the Capulet family, who were the rightful rulers of Neo Verona, and gained control of the city. The last surviving Capulet - Juliet, a two-year-old toddler at the time - was whisked away to safety by loyal servants after witnessing the death of her father.
Fourteen years later, we see the effects of Montague rule on the city, as the nobles take advantage of the poor commoners in the name of hunting down Capulet survivors. A young girl disguises herself as a masked Zorro-like swordsman called the Red Whirlwind and roams the streets of Neo Verona, helping the poor and fighting the oppressors. Romeo, the son of Grand Duke Montague, and his friend Benvolio are living bored, somewhat frustrated lives as the sons of noblemen. And in the meantime, Juliet's sixteenth birthday draws close...

To be honest, I was a bit surprised. I didn't anticipate that it would be such a good story, but GONZO has completely wowed me. It's a completely new take on Shakespeare's tale... anime-style. Romeo x Juliet is one of those animes that will become a classic, I think. Right from the opening song all the way to the end, it's both beautiful and action-packed. In terms of storytelling and art style, it seems most similar to Scrapped Princess. The soaring vocals of the opening song (which has the same melody as "You Raise Me Up") gives you a very good idea of what feeling this anime is going for. Only two episodes have been subbed so far, and the third one just came out in Japan, but I'm looking forward to it so much!
Anyone else share an opinion on this?
