If it wasn't the case SD wouldn't have specified oh great's plots and side stories are lame...
Do you know what barring means? It means to block out, or to leave out. You can easily say something like, "What's your favorite food? My favorite food, is pizza but leaving aside the fact that it uses cheese and I'm lactose intolerant, it is still my favorite."

    Oh, and btw :

Thanks for listening to someone who can't understand what he reads
Again your being nitpicky. I just used the term mangaka falsely. And I admit that I'm wrong, However, he said ARTIST, and usually people with common sense in our society today believe such artists create ART. And when we think ART, we think illustrations.

you may think of what you want when thinking about art, but it doesn't mean that the definition of art is not in fact broader... now to get back to the original point, i understand SD was mainly speaking about graphical art, but unless he states otherwise i think other artistic forms are to be taken into account to judge of the level of a manga artist... (thus the fact that he said he considered oh great to be the greatest artist even though he lacks non graphical skills, which means that this mangaka would be a even greater artist if he was better in these other fields)

Nevertheless, you can nominate the mangakas that has the best graphical skills if you want, though i don't think i am out of subject by taking their other skills into account.

Its about Artwork, the pictures. Not storylines.

For the standard style, it's definitely Oh Great. Say his plot sucks all you like, it doesn't change that at his current art level he does kineticism so well that the Air Gear manga did a better job of making the characters seem to be in motion than the anime did. This is present even in his earlier works where he wasn't as good at the human form yet.

The other thing he's amazing at is non-people. There are a lot of artists that can whip out a swoon-worthy girl (I personally don't like the giant boobs Oh Great gives most of his characters anyway), but there are far fewer that draw realistic machines and guns and animals. His attention to detail in those is amazing.

Not to say that Oh Great is the only great artist out there, he's just the one who's taken the standard "moe" manga art style to its zenith. For realistic art you have comparable figures like Miura (Berserk) and Inoue (Vagabond), with Yan Kyung Il (Island, Shin Angyo Onshi, Zombie Hunter) deserving an honourable mention as well. And in the more stylized varients, I'd give points to Araki (JoJo), Kubo (Bleach), Taguchi (Battle Royale), and Hirano (Hellsing).

    Uryuu freaky, pale and geeky,
    how do your powers grow?
"With gloves and scars and silver stars
and swords that I shoot from a bow,
yes, swords that I shoot from a bow."

Possibly. But it's not like there are only a few different choices though, there are a lot of talented artists out there.

There's others that can replicate what he does, like the guy that wrote fire candy (Yonekura Kengo I think, might be a pen name though).

I personally like Tsutomu Nihei's works a lot, backgrounds are great, he puts a lot of detail into the explosions, the non-human characters are very unique and detailed, and the faces are pretty versatile too, no two people really looks alike, though he tends to recycle them from one series to another.
